cold weather shifter?

Post by RodBow »

Since its gotten cooler my column automatic transmission gear shifter is hard to move in the mornings. It's almost to the point of feeling like it's gonna break something moving into D or back again.

Anybody know where the lube needs to go or where I need to sit a lightbulb at night to keep it warm?

'93 Chevy G20 van

Thanks!

SHIFTER

OPEN THE HOOD AND LOOK DOWN JUST BELOW THE FIREWALL AND YOU WILL SEE SEVERAL SHIFTER RODS, THE GREASE HAS BUILT UP AND THEY ARE WORN, SPRAY A GOOD APPLICATION OF ANY LIGHT LUBRICANT ON THESE ARMS AND CONNECTORS, THIS WILL PROBABLY SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM. THE RODS ARE CONNECTED TO THE STEERING COLUMN.

Thanks PA, but I said a '93 not a '39... This thing has a single cable running from an assembly on top of the column all the way to the trans. It's in a sheath and unaccessable except for about 6" at the trans when in park to about 2" when in 1. Without disassembly I hope the juice I put in the top will creep down the cable to get it moving better.

I had the same problem with a pontiac with the cable. Let me tell you what it is.....I did not believe it either, but the guy that told me was 100% right...

The ground cables from the engine to the frame are not making a good connection. What is happening is that the shift cable is being used as a ground for the engine, and the cable is getting hot, melting the plastic liner into the cable.

I learned the hard way after buying 3 cables, and finally going to a dealer and asking....

Sorry to say, but only way to fix it will probably be a new cable, installed AFTER you fix the ground strap. It usually runs from the rear of the engine to the firewall area. It may look bolted up, but the connection will be bad....

Hope this helps you.....
