Spring Creek, Again!

Post by Capt Reggie »

:smt007 We wore the redfish out yesterday in and around Spring Creek. The air temperature was in the 70's, while the water temps had fallen to the low 60's. The tide was going out when we all arrived at the landing around 10 a.m. and put the boats in. It was a mixed crew this time: TallyFly was joined by our club's two lady flyfishers, Jo and Rose, in Gerald's boat; I went over to my son's boat to do a family fishing adventure with my grandson. Everyone had a splendid time. Bobby & I went into the "boils" to find some Mango Snapper, but they were not at home this time. Only the Ladyfish provided some sport for my grandson's little "Snoopy rod" using a small Nylar jig tipped with shrimp. We left Gerald and the ladies in the boils catching fish on the flyrods while Bobby moved us up the river to a deep hole and found the redfish were plentiful and hungry. We all wore our arms out catching reds (probably a couple dozen), none over 18 inches, but what a time my grandson had getting those strong pulls from the smaller reds! Mud minnows, live shrimp, and shrimp tipped jigs did the trick.

Finally, around 3:00, we grew tired of catching little reds, so I talked my son into easing along the "cut through" creek (a short cut over into the bay filled with oyster bars) - bad idea! :smt010 We became stuck in the creek for over an hour due to my stupid decision. :smt014 My son was not very happy with my pinheaded decision. My grandson didn't care, though. By the time the tide came in enough to let Bobby use the trolling motor and get us out, it was too late to fish any longer. So, we put the boat on the trailer and headed for the house to clean up the boat and tackle. Not a bad day, at all, I think.

:smt010 Gottawatch them low winter tides, been caught by them myself a few times. Glad your grandson got into some reds, he'll always remember trips like that one. I can still remember fishing with my Granddad on the Aucilla back in the late 60's.

Getting stuck kinda sucks but sounds your grandson had a great time.

I love sitting in my kayak and watching that kinda stuff happen, but sorry it happened to you. It was fun watching a 24' Pathfinder try to push on through one day.

:smt004 Yep, sure makes me wish for a Kayak when that stuff happens, Jeff! Then, again, I couldn't take all the "stuff" and the family in one of those sleek boats either. So, I guess I better stay out of those small creeks and find another way around to the oyster bars. Next time around in Spring Creek (and there will be another day) with those "bigger" boats I will stay out of the creeks because "Mr. Murphy" only gets to mess with me once - twice and that's stupid. My son said he was going to get our 16' Gheenoe to go into those places the next time...smart man!
