Jill , Gone but not forgotten. Nov 96- Jan 07

Post by BAD BEHAVIOR »

After working until midnight every night for the last week to get three stores ready for our big sale on Friday, I sat down at my cabin in Cairo with high hopes of a nice Thanksgiving day deer hunting and spending time with family. My girlfriend called me to tell me when she got to my house in Adel, my lab Jill had passed away. It doesnt make sense, she was eleven years old, but I just took her to the vet yesterday because of a sore shoulder. He gave her a good checkup and said the shoulder should be fine. He placed her on an oral arthritis medicine and I gave her her first dose this morning. I patted her head and told her I loved her and she just stared at me as I got in the truck. I hollered back out the window and told her I loved her and that I would see her in a little bit. I know its crazy to care so much about a dog but my hearts broken tonight. She and I have hunted water from Florida into Georgia all the way to the northeast corner of Arkansas. That dog carried more birds and ducks than I could ever count. She was trained to hand and had a better hunters instinct than any dog I had ever seen. I ve seen her go when field trial dogs would have been ready to head to the kennel. She never said quit, no matter how hot the air or how cold the ice she had to bust to bring her daddy back that last greenhead. I got her in Jan'97 when she was 49 days old. She lived with me in my apartment in college, wearing out every duck hole we could get invited on. Never forget the time she blind retrieved a woodie out of a beaver swamp that fell about two hundred yards from where I shot it. Anyways, I ve lost one hell of a family member. I dont have kids so I can honestly say I feel like I ve lost a child. I cant imagine missing anything more. Thanks guys for listening.

BB,

Sorry to hear about the loss of a good friend. I heard about this link on 88.1 FM yesterday, I listened to it last night, and I think it may be of some comfort. It speaks to God understanding loss....

Best,

PFM

Sorry to hear about your loss BB. My first real hunting dog died about 4 years ago (only 9 years old) and I still think about him and the things he used to do in the field.

Thanks guys. Thanks PFM for the nice message in the video. This is the first morning in a long time I ve walked through my breakfast area and not heard her tail thumping the deck to look up and see a set of flamin brown eyes peering through the french doors waiting on someone to come sail a canvas dummy for her to bring back to hand. Its amazing how much love and affection a dog can give and never ask for a dang thing in return. It just doesnt make sense. Ill be glad to get back to work, this sittin around is killin me! Thanks again guys, youre a class group that Im proud to be affiliated with, even you MD.
