Cajun Thunder Rod

Describe the ideal rod for working a Cajun Thunder. I was fighting a too slow, whippy rod this weekend. I am thinking about trying a 7 1/2 footer I have that has not had much use in the past because it is so heavy.

I don't know but I hope to see some good advice on the subject. I was thinking of purchasing a Shimano Sedona reel and a stout 7 ft rod with 10# line. Maybe some one will tell us what works for them before I make my purchase.

I prefer a stiff one

, but right now my CT rig is a 7'6" Ugly Stik Inshore Medium Light action with a Shimano Stradic and I kinda like its ability to fling it a country mile, but it lacks back bone and can wear on you if you work it long......My next purchase will be for a Medium Heavy action rod and a spool of power pro, should make for an ideal CT rod.....Just my opinion......

Using a 6ft ML/fast action St Croix and Shimano Syncopate using 10lb Ande Backcountry line. Its supposed to be feshwater setup, but works just fine in saltwater, and does not show any signs of corrosion.

One thing I have found that really helps on CT's is using Power Pro. The no stretch really lets you pop it. Its the only rod I have power pro on.

I prefer the MH rod

mine is the MH 6.6 Berkley Lightning Rod

MH and braided line (7-foot of rod)

I have the ugly stick inshore as well as a Berkley, both are pretty good IMHO

A 7 1/2 foor Shakespeare Excursion rod is perfect for a CT. $13.88 at Walmart. Since it's from Walmart, if you don't like it you can take it back.
Ask TC about it. I have gone to them exclusively.

Chris, Is there only one model of 7 1/2' Shakespeare Excursion rod at Wally World? If not, what action do you have?

A $14 rod, holy cow!

I would ask Tin Can about it but he is a dang workaholic these days.

Makes me tired just hearing about it.

Ken, a CT is difficult to throw. My experience has been the longer the rod, the easier it is to throw. Also, I prefer a light action rod for inshore fishing. I'm actually using a 7.5' Sheakspere Axium. I've only seen it in one action. All of my rods are casting rods. I don't know if there is a 7.5' made in a spinning rod. Wal-Mart carries both the Excursion and Axium line of Sheakspere rods. However, the Axium is an IM-7 graphite rod with light weight stainless steel guides. But you have to pay quite a bit more for the Axium. It sells for $26.96.

BTW, I was using the Axium when you and I fished Aucilla.

I use a 7 foot MH Radbone and love it. Shimano Stradic for a reel. I have been using it for 3 years now.

TC, Is your Excursion/Okuma a 7 or 7 1/2??

I'd emphasize line choice as a primary issue with CT. Lines with stretch add to an already tricky set of variables for setting a hook. The rod can be standard inshore gear - 7' and fairly stiff.
