Fishing in the Fog - 1-12-08

Went north of Keaton today with the brother-in-law. Fog rolled in as we were unloading the boat, but I had my GPS along with me so we didn’t have a problem. I got my GPS out while I was still in the channel.

We began to catch fish as soon as we got "there". Caught all fish on a Gulp - mostly on the incoming tide. Ended up with 8 trout and 4 reds (kept only two of course). Most of the trout were 18-19”, largest one ~22, smallest 17. Largest red was 22". Lost one "large red"….of course…you only lose the large ones…it makes a better story. Actually, it was my fault, I forgot to check my grub’s status on the hook after I had just caught a trout. Next cast was the red…it had a pretty big tail.

NOAA weather prediction was (gasp) wrong. Wind speed = wrong, wind direction = wrong, conditions = wrong!

The story for today is to never go out without a GPS. The fog was so thick water formed on my glasses if I ran at any speed. We didn’t venture too far from where we put in, so we always knew where we were. A few ‘ghost boats’ came by us (usually two or three tagging along together) trying to find their way back to Keaton.

I have taken the time to mark the various channel markers of the places I fish and it paid off today. Please take the time to do this...you never know when the fog will roll in or something else will happen. I was surprised that as we got about 3-4 miles from the coast there wasn't any fog, which is a lesson that you never can tell what the weather at the coast will be until you get there. I hope everyone got home safely.

I fished that area recently with 2 world class fishermen.
We didn't catch squat. A couple short reds.
