drum roll 1/12/08

Post by SHOWBOAT »

Saturday I had a chance to fish with a couple good buddies. Matt, who fished both the Jan and Feb tournaments with me last year, and Rod, who lives in Tampa but was able to fish the May tournament with me while back for my wedding. As always, a great trip with those two along. We managed to find some fish too which never hurts.

We were the first boat out of the Aucilla and quickly found ourselves in a creek that was holding some trout. Landed a couple slot fish, but left them in search of reds. Tried desperately to get into a notorious redfish creek, but the tide had dropped too much. Anticipating that the fish may have been chased out of the creek as well, we commenced fishing the flats in front of it. We started in about 6" of water and drifted out catching about a half dozen upper-slot fish (many of which didn't have any spots...).

Rod usually has the lukcy hand, but Matt seemed to be in the groove today. In attempt to swing the numbers back in my favor, and with the water moving in, I convinced the crew to move up into a creek for a change of scenery.

I proceeded to put 4 more reds in the boat and Matt and Rod each landed one as well. Brought the daily total to two trout and about a dozen reds. Got a fancy-dandy camera for Christmas (don't really like technology, but the family really enjoys seeing pictures), so tried taking some pics. This camera is supposed to be totally waterproof (no casing necessary) and allow underwater photography. I quickly learned that it may well be, but that my heart isn't that steady. Dipping a new digital camera into the saltwater isn't as easy as one may think. After getting several pictures at surface level because I was trying to get the camera out of the water as quickly as possible, I did manage one cool underwater photo.

Broke my normal catch and release pattern in light of the anticipated long evening with good company. We kept three to blacken, added some rice and karacha sauce for great dinner. Had some crown and cokes along with a stogie and called it a day.

Thanks guys. Enjoyed it.
