Gulp! comment.

I like this debate. Fishing lures are all about confidence and variety. The fish don't always want the same thing, and even if they do want the same thing they might want it presented in a different manner. I usually keep multiple rods rigged and ready to go with everything from soft plastics, hardbaits, CT, topwater and yes sometimes a gulp or live pinfish. Stick with what works for YOU. Better yet, throw arti out the front and have a live pinfish under a CT hangin' out the back. It all about more chances to catch some FISHES. Remember......it's just fishin', have fun.

For the record, I prefer the fly rod, topwater as much as possible, I will use a Gulp,
and the biggest Flounder I ever caught I got with a cinder block.

In regards to finding out what was most productive for people at the end of the tournament, my partner Bryce wanted asked me to go ahead and offer his lure of choice before the start of it. This lure, he says, has the combination of not only smell, but also noise. He would like everyone to know that he plans to throw his favorite Redfish lure "the Popping cork and hotdog combination."

I have tried over the years to deter him from using this deadly combination. It's like cheating Itell him. He doesn't listen.

I use anything I think catches fish. Live and artificial. Gulp included. It's more expensive than other plastics, but cheaper than live shrimp.

Half the fun is trying new stuff. It's even better when it works.

I'll also throw this out there about the GULP debate. I use them, and use them on charters regularly because with novice anglers they increase the number of bites and landed fish - especially on trout. I also don't have to buy expensive live shrimp and worry about keeping them alive in a livewell. We will add some live pinfish in the mix and we are set for the day. It helps me out when I have multiple anglers on board because I am not baiting or tipping with shrimp constantly. It is actually cheaper for me to fish GULP on a charter than buying 100 shrimp (or more) a day. The GULP is tough enough to stay on through many fish. And I re-use all GULP peices to catch pinfish or tip other baits such as SWAs or DOAs. Don't really care what other people think about them. I know it puts money in the tip jar at the end of the day.

I agree with the previous poster - they're great for a novice. I used them a lot when they first came out cause I bought in to the hype but over time I noticed a marked decline in number and quality of fish caught. They're great for garbage fishing though. I even still carry a pack most of the time in case I get the urge for catching live pinfish on those days when we make an ad-hoc decision to abandon the flats and go after offshore fish. They are great pinfish bait - squeeze little chunks off with nail clippers and put em on a little crappie hook. I went many whole days a while back using them trout fishing and caught some decent keepers. In similar weather and time of year I've gone an hour or two with a spook or any of a vast assortment of mirrolures and caught literally 5-10 times as many good trout and far fewer trash fish. And to compare smelly, fake-looking apples to apples, I can say the same for the Tsunami soft/swimbaits I was experimenting with a while back, several of the Saltwater Assassin swim baits, redfish magics and even Got-Cha grubs, all of which netted fewer trash fish. I guess I even have to agree with ole man Jumptrout that the saltwater assassin and Capt Mikes are better. In the few winter months I experimented with them, I caught exactly one redfish on Gulp.

If the original assertion that they catch fish 4 to 1 over other baits was true, I'd use them and I don't think there'd be much discussion about it, but for me, I fish about 100 days a year, and among the 5 or 6 different soft baits I've spent much time with, they have come in dead last in my experience in both quality and quantity of fish caught. I'm certianly no pro and not claiming to be an expert, but as much time as I spend on the water, I've used Gulp and several competitors for literally hundreds of hours each so there's little chance of this all being coincidence. I think, and this is not directed at anyone personally, and certainly not at the orignal poster here, that the only way they're going to outfish other baits 4 to 1 is if you have no idea what you're doing (at least with the other baits) in which case the smelly gulp has an advantage over something else unnatural looking that doesn't smell. On the other hand, it could just be that I know how to work all the other soft baits I've used but have no idea what I'm doing with Gulp!

I think Chalk hit the nail on the head about the tournament results. How many times in the 80's did the winning superbowl QB have any plans that didn't involve going to Disney World immediately after winning the game? Am I to assume then that making plans to go to Disney World will win me a Super Bowl? Think about it...

Maybe all those tour Redfish guys are all lying but the guy that beat all you guys last year at your own game in your back yard ( Casey Cook) said that's what he caught most of his fish on.

I am not sure he threw any other bait one time the day I fished with him.
