I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments on this one, but I'll have to say I'm with ak man. I keep a variety of everything in my bag, from "smelly" Gulp to an assortment of unflavored soft plastics, jerk baits, spoons, etc, etc, etc. Bottom line, fish with what the fish want to eat. I keep several rods rigged with an assortment of the aforementioned baits and ain't skeered to chunk what ever it takes to catch fish. I'm on the water to have fun and catch fish and don't usually have trouble doing either, whether I'm chunking Gulp or something else. See ya'll at the SGO sale at the Gulp display.

Hey Mook, my point with Gulps were mainly my experience with them in the winter months. As far as the experience comment I will let that slide, I get the whole politicaly correct way of saying "I fish 100 days a year, so your 4-1 theory is garbage"

What a mess wrote:Maybe all those tour Redfish guys are all lying but the guy that beat all you guys last year at your own game in your back yard ( Casey Cook) said that's what he caught most of his fish on.

I am not sure he threw any other bait one time the day I fished with him.

angler of the year says  to gulp  no to antigulp jive. You heard it hear.

:o How much gas did you use in those 100 days Mook? No wonder oil is at $100 a barrel... :smt005

The 4-1 ratio is crap unless you're talking amount of Gulps get chewed apart by trash fish compared to other soft plastics. I'll give you that they do OK in the cooler months because there are'nt trash fish in any great numbers, but when the pinners and lizards are around they wont find thier way onto my hook again, less I'm going offshore and need some bait and dont have any chum. Fish with what you want but in my book they are just not worth the hassle

This has truned into quite a hot topic.

MY.02 cent

My wife uses them because she can throw them out and set the rod in the holder and getsome sun. I don't use them that much but will if the mood strikes. The main problem I have with is the expense for a bag of the dang things. I can live with or without them and don't feel that I am a die hard Gulper (I trademarked that name). Just don't see what the fuss is all about.

My comment about Gulps should not be called crap pal, myself and two fellow forum members have caught over 200 redfish in the last 4 trips we have been on and all I am trying to say is I have thrown multiple baits at redfish and the one bait that gets better results at this point of the year is Gulps. If anyone can match these numbers please let me know so I can try there bait of choice. Alot of folks like to hear whats getting the most production now not what works for most of us other times of the year. I get that Gulps suck 10 months out of the year.

Just lettin ya know how I felt about Gulp. I keep some for my kids to fish with but for me they are just to aggrevating to deal with. I only fish for reds and trout in the warmer months,so my experience only goes so far. As far as saying your comment was crap, I appologize, but can you honestly say that you threw any other single lure at least 25% of the time?

He can say he threw something else 25% of the time because we all three started throwing other things to see how they would bite. Might as well experiment whilewe have a known factor. We threw spoons, jigs, stick baits, and even tried with and without flouro. And what we found out has increased out fishing productivity. And I 'm not sure what others are doing or how they are doing it, but we have been catching 10-15 Redfish with the same stinky piece of Gulp. And what is the complaint about it being sticky. Every fish I ever caught was stinky and wet. Kinda redundant. There is a time and a place to fish gulp, and when its cold and deep, thats when! I encourage everyone to stop using Gulp. More fish for the rest of us.

FYI:
The FSU Marine Laboratory was Berkely's research lab for the development of Gulp.
So each time you catch one of those garnet fish remember to give thanks to Saint Bobby.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.

All this talk of Gulp only working two months out of the year made me look back at past reports and jot down some notes from each tournament about what the partner and I used. This post is not made to brag, just to show how I’ve used Gulps all year and consistently caught fish.

If I had it my way, I’d throw topwater all day every day. Some days that just won’t work. It is interesting to note that the big trout of the year wasn’t caught on a Gulp or topwater, but was caught on the TSS.

January – Skunked – we fished up in the East River using Gulp jigs and caught a bunch of redfish, no trout. Last place.

February – Didn’t fish the tournament due to LSAT

March – Keaton Beach – Fished with BH#3. Our first day ever fishing there was the Friday before the tournament. We fished around oyster bars and came in fourth using Gulp TSS, big fish 25”, four over 20”. We caught a couple fish on TW, but most on the TSS.

April – cancelled

May – St Joe – Our first time fishing the waters were the Friday before the tournament. We won the tournament and caught every fish but 1 (topwater) on TSS – big fish 24”. There was too much floating grass to throw topwater.

June – Fished Aucilla – caught 4 fish between 23-24”, one on TW, two on Gulp TSS, one on Gulp jig; we struggled to find slot fish – came in 4th

July – fished at the Aucilla with Pat – no fish over 20”, Slow day but most of the fish were caught on TSS or gulp jig – threw TW, TSS and Gulp jigs all day – finished 7th

August – Fished with my Dad at the Aucilla – big fish at 21” – came in 4th - used TW, twitchbaits and gulp jigs the whole day – caught our big fish on a Gulp jig.

September – fished with Pat in Carrabelle. Wind blew like a MF, caught five trout on gulp 5” JS and stopped fishing at 11:30 due to high winds and waves – finished 2nd - too windy to throw anything else – only two teams caught a limit of fish.

October – fished with Ty around St. Marks – he caught his big one, 26” on a non-Gulp TSS, one fish caught on TW, three others caught on gulp jig – won the tournament

November – fished with TY and Pat around RFP – big trout caught by Ty on non-Gulp TSS, three other fish caught on Gulp jig – won the tournament.

It's quite possible that we got lucky or that we were simply in areas where there were a lot of fish. I just know that they helped me catch fish and some good ones too. I realize that others are successful doing completely different stuff. I'd love to see how some of the Seatrout guys fished each of their tournaments. I know that there are some great fisherman on this site and I hope to continue to learn from them.
