St. Marks Lighthouse 2/10
I hoped to have a little better luck to report since this is my first fishing report but things did not go quite as planned. I made it to the lighthouse about 6:50 with my waders and fly rod to try and catch a few fish before lunch. I probably should have checked the weather because the wind was blowing a little more than expected. Regardless, I grabbed a couple of flies and headed east toward the little creek. The tide was fairly low but I was able to spot a couple of tails about 100 yards east of the lighthouse. I waded to about 50 feet of the fish, stripped out some line, made a quick cast, and then things got interesting. I had sunk about halfway to the knees. I then remembered someone posting yesterday about the difficulty of wearing waders that were slightly too big. That fact becomes all too apparent when you are trying to pry your leg out the nasty muck. I finally freed myself but the fish had moved on down the flats. Around 9:00 I had made it down to the little creek and noticed another small pod of fish feeding off the bank. I was able to make my way within 40 feet and made a nice little cast. I initially thought I had spooked the fish but after a couple short strips I realized that one had become extremely interested in my offering. A short fight later and I had landed a nice 23" or so redfish. I had my camera and actually made an attempt at a photo but I was once again sinking up to my knees in some muck and I really needed to get out. The nice part was that I caught this fish on a fly that I recently tied. I had hoped the day would be better but one fish is better than no fish. Plus, the weather was pretty nice and that more than made up for the workout I got with the waders.

No kidding. I need to practice casting left-handed or otherwise I am going to wind up with a clouser embedded in my face and an unwanted trip to Capital Regional.flounderpounder wrote:Sounds fun! Tough wind today, NORTHGood report

I feel you on the wading in the mud. It sure sucked yesterday and I'm sure it was just as bad today. Good report...catching a red on fly is quite an accomplishment!
Keep the reports coming!
