St Marks 2008.02.10

Post by Mook! »

Well I snuck a short report in to TC's report from today. Long story short, lots of wind, not as warm as yesterday, not as much water, same number of slot fish. Only saw a few reds today, second fewest I've seen all year I think. Left a little earlier than normal from boredom, skunked.

Couple of intereting things:

We saw a group of people pull a 35 foot Scarab with trip 250's out at the public ramp at the fort in just under 20 minutes...right in front of us in line of course.

I mentioned something in our tournament report yesterday about mojo's trolling motor not working. It's been giving us trouble for the last 4-6 weeks. Speed control sometimes working sometimes not, steering working then going out. It's one of them fancy Co-Pilot things that you can only control via remote or pedal - no manual steering and the servo was just cutting in and out. Auto pilot worked for a while then decided to keep bearing it needed to make 1080 degree turns and such as that.

Well today we finally found the problem with the trolling motor - it was on fire! Yes indeedy...toxic smelly smoke abound! Mojo carefully kicked the carp out of the power cable disconnecting it from the boat. It put itself out after about 30 seconds of us standing there with the fire extinguisghers saying "daaaaaaaaang" and "So that's what the problem was"

Oh well, they say ya learn something new every day you go fishing, and today we learned the problem with mojo's less-than-a-year-old-thousand-dollar-trolling-motor is that it was just on fire and that's why it wouldn't work...at least we now know there's nothing wrong with the boat. We kept thinking something was wrong with the batteries or something. :-?

I'm quite sure mojo will be on the horn with them tomorrow. When the problems started, it was just under 10 months old and had maybe 20 hours usage since he got the boat new right before warm weather and we spent most of the summer drifting and such. Thanks for the advice though.

I can hear it now, " Well there's your problem right there Mojo, the damn things on fire. How'd you miss that one?"

Hate to hear about the trolling motor. Minn Kota has always come through for me. They'll make it right.
What was I supposed to do today?
