Oyster Bay - 2/9

Post by Reel Country »

SeaTrout99 and his son, Carson met me at Jerry's for the NFGFC tourney. We jumped in ST99's Seminole Classic Go-Devil boat and took a chance on Oyster Bay as ST99 had heard reports of redfish in there. We checked numerous spots in the really shallow water. Saw plenty of reds, we just happened to spook all of them before getting them to bite.
Best fishing came later in the day after the tide swung and we found a deep spot between to oyster bars holding nice trout. Good day on the water and good food at the weigh-in.

Thanks for the report. Spooked fish seem to be the rule, especially in low water.
I assume they're programmed to fear attack from anywhere at any time. What I've seen they
have to worry about in February are Pelicans, Porpoise, and people.
They can hear the people & Porpoise coming but I wonder what it's like to have a giant bird try to land on you.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.

Thanks for the report RC. Those of us who missed most of the weigh-in and cookout are curious! We've been dealing with the reds everywhere and few catches most days since December. So far the only strategy that has worked for me to overcome that spookiness is persistence and a little luck (Unfortunately what little luck we've had lately has mostly been bad).
Mookbait! At least 401 times better than live bait!

I was starting to wonder why I didn't receive a phone call. I have never seen so many reds as I did from ........................................... edited: too specific.

I told Chris to blind cast to 3 spots and not get too close as the water was very clear. Also gigged a couple 18" sheephead and a 19" sheephead on that bar.

This was as close as we could get to the reds without them spooking. ;-)

For those of us fishing in that area on a regular basis, could you set a barrel out there and write FISH HERE on it. And post my address up too.
