Met Showboat at Jerry's Bait & Tackle for their Redfish tournament along with 13 other teams. We cut out and headed to the Aucilla River, only to find the water was not going to be meeting us there til later. Showboat started making a new plan and since he was driving, I followed him all the way to JR's at which point we grabbed a Yoohoo and headed back to the ramp. Mother nature smiled on us and dropped a salty tear for us to unload the boat onto and we began a rock dodging campaign out to the Gulf of Mexico. Temperature was 39 deg F when we left the ramp so I was a little disappointed when Showboat asked me to sit on the bow of the boat so that we could navigate the shallow flats at 23 mph. Just so you know that makes a wind-chill at just under 30 deg F. Wasn't too bad since I only had to ride like that for about 40 minutes. We finally eased her on down and I felt like jumping in the water to warm up. He looked amazing warm after riding in my draft the whole way. We were about to start fishing when low flying Express buzzed pass. Didn't hurt our day none though as we fished on down wind a little further.
We set into a nice drift and started blind casting Capt Mike Spoons to find a few Redfish feeding. Bait started getting stirred up and we were able to site fish to some tailing and feeding Redfish. We started with a double hook up, and was just one of four we would have for the day. Showboat landed a nice 26.5" Redfsih and I landed a nice 27.5" Redfish. Showboat then landed a nice 23" and I landed a nice 28". Things were just not going as planned, but I was not disappointed in the total outcome. We were getting on the far end of the drift and running out of Redfish and tried to turn into the wind. It was not cooperative, and were stuck in place and had to make the best of fishing in less than 8" of water a little longer. Soon we were casting into Redfish feeding on mullet. After the fish got done with us on the flats we moved into a creek with some low expectations of catching any good size fish. Boy were we wrong. We caught as many fish in the creeks as we did on the flats. We ended the day with 11lbs and 12 oz of fish and just barely got first place in the tournament. I won't even bother mentioning the tangles, and rods we stopped using, but we did have a great day fishing and meeting folks.
Keep a tight line, and nice fishing with you Showboat.
