St. Marks 2-23-08

Post by Good Times »

Dad and I put in at the fort at noon under cloudy skies. The water was not as high as I had expected with the rain lately.

Ran east into some creeks. Water was gin clear. The skies cleared and the sun came out. We saw about 15 - 20 reds today up in the creeks but they were very skiddish. Took out like scalded bandits. Looked over and saw Mook and Mojo working the creeks to the east of us. Mook, that was us in the bass tracker you saw as you were coming out into the bay. Nice boat Mojo.

Dad hooked up on a red in a creek mouth but the leader failed almost instantly. I think I got a bad batch of Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon leader. :hammer:  The knots were holding. It would just break. I almost lost a spoon today like that. The leader broke while I was casting. I was able to retrieve the lure with my net. I"ll be chunking that leader.

Highlights of the day:

1) First time we've been skunked in two years.
2) Got to break in my new Curado 200 and Calcutta rod.
3) Beautiful weather and water.
4) Good time with Dad.
5) Meet family at The Seinyard and had the flounder. If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em.

We'll get em next time.

Thanks for posting- even a bad day gives us all some good info.
If you and you Pop had come to the Social you would have had full bellies and a lure or two at the least!

Good times...good times...maybe the weather was affecting the line. I bought a nimre red ripper at JBT on the way out, tied on a new leader, two new SPro swivels, and the new Nemire. On the third cast my power pro broke off for no good reason, and wow what a cast. Looked for the lure for a few minutes cause the water was glassy at the time...no dice. We had about the same fishing experience as you guys. I got a lot of hits on the Johnson again, but no hookups. Only hookup of the day was on a urine-colored Mookbait, but I choked and lost it.
Mookbait! At least 401 times better than live bait!

I almost lost a red ripper as well. Of course it landed in the only 4 foot hole in the creek. It's fun trying to drive the trolling motor foot pedal with one hand and reach down with your net to get that spoon. I managed to get it though. Only took about ten minutes. Thought I was gonna have to dive for it.

Dad got his hit on the pink red ripper. Somewhere there is a highly accessorized red sporting a brand new pink spoon. :D
