ST. MARKS 11-15-03

Post by dolphinatic »

Me and the 9-year-old headed out from the Fort about 7:30. It was a bit chilly running out, but a welcome change to usual heat and humidity. We stopped out just east of the lighthouse and started fishing in 4-5 ft. of water. After 2 hours of NO fish whatsoever, I was suddenly reminded of why I rarely fish St. Marks anymore. However, I did boat a 28" speck there earlier this year  .

We decided to move and go towards Grey Mare. The tide was getting low, but we decided that our luck couldn't get any worse. Fianlly. around 11:15, I boated the first keeper trout :P . I caught one more keeper about 15 minutes later, and that was it. The boy was happy just catching pinfish! I used one for bait and after 30 minutes or so, it disappeared.

We decided to move out into the 7-8 ft. depths and our luck picked up a little when we switched over to fishing a chicken-bone SWA on the bottom. The fish were active, but mostly shorts. We made 2 more drifts and decided to call it a day.

TOTAL FOR THE DAY: 3 KEEPER TROUT (15-17"), 2 NICE ROCK BASS, ABOUT 5-7 SHORTS.

We fished mainly SWA's (chicken-bone, pinfish, electric-chicken) and green split curly tails. Caught 1 trout off shrimp.

All in all it was a nice day on the water and any time I get to spend time with my boy fishing, it's a good day no matter the catch. Next time we will definately be heading back to the Econfina!
