St Marks Sat 3/22/08

Post by QueenB »

It was great to be back out on the water. The weather started a little cloudy and cool with a breeze, but before long the wind died and it was almost slick. Weather was great, conditions on the water were great, fishing.....not so great. I did catch the first fish of the day! I foul hooked a pin fish, my 3" gulp was larger than the fish! It did not matter, I still have the first catch of the day, hahahaha. The fish got bigger from there but not big enough. The bite got better in the afternoon, but everything was short. We lost count of how many 14" to 14.5" trout we caught. On the up side, we didn't have fish to clean when we got home and we did have fish from last year in the freezer to eat on Easter Sunday with the family. Overall, it was great to be on the water. I just hope that the bite will get better as the weather warms. Does anyone know what all the improvements will be at the Fort? Are they putting in multiple boat ramps? I hope they work quick, I don't think Sheilds can handle the overflow. It was a little crazy and crowded there on Saturday when everyone was waiting to take out.

Glad you got out and caught fish! A trip with a bunch of shorts is better than a trip with no fish at all!
Did you throw the pinfish back out there under a bobber?

I put in at Shields on Saturday. When I motored by the Fort the ramp was open, there were trucks parked there with trailers, someone was putting a boat in the water...

Made me scratch my head as I thought the sign said it was closed through May.

You know I did!! I was hoping something large would come along and take, but no luck.

I saw the same thing at the Fort. I saw some boats putting in there although the sign said they were closed. I thought to myself, what if they have began digging up the ramp and it's messed up, but you can't tell until you get your boat backed down there. I figure better safe than sorry, that's why we went down to Sheilds. Plus, I don't want to do anything to mess up the plans for the fort. I want them to finish the improvements and get things back in working order ASAP. I will take a day on the water catching shorts over sitting at the house anyday! Glad to know others were struggling with catching keepers on Saturday too. (Except for Casey Cook!!!) I was starting to think last year I just had beginners luck!

I had the same experience as most everyone on Saturday... beautiful weather... not so good fishing. Only two keeper trout and a spanish came home for dinner. Stopped and picked up some great stone crab though. Awesome!!!

Thanks for the report, QB. I agree, shorts are better than nothing, and dang sure better than working.
