St Marks 3/22 & Keaton 3/23

Post by Reel Slow »

Had a college buddy come in from Portland OR for a little flats fishing.

Saturday we went E from Lighthouse with plans to fly fish for reds and trout...cloudy and cold as everyone in Keaton found out...Need to get some of those sunglasses that work in the clouds. Found good trout in 1 - 3' at tail end of low tide. Caught 15 or so over 2 hours...very fat 19 - 23" trout on soft-jerkbaits. Very aggressive bite. Left them biting and went lookin for reds. Worked up 1 creek and found 3 reds at the tail end of the rise, 21-24"ers. Dissapointed in the reds on the flats, only saw 1 bolt from the boat. Buddy took all the picts which are at 10,000' right now.

Sunday we went to keaton hoping the wind would by less than predicted. Saw Ron Wilson on the way out the canal, he said "its rough out there!" and it was very windy...ENE 15-20 knots early, laying to 10 knots later then really blowing from the NW about 3pm. Early we drifted and sight fished reds...big reds...drifting about 7mph though. Had quick shots using fly rod, but no takers....As I'm looking for fish I hear "got him!" My buddy catches his first red, sight fished with a spoon...the red mowed some serious turtle grass for several minutes and finally got off. He was hooked.

Tried more sight fishing but fish dispersed after rise began in ernest. Poled a shallow flat...nothing. So we went after some trout. Landed eight or so 18-20" fish and a fat 24"er. We caught 6 middle slot reds with the trout. Again buddy took all the picts, but I did take time to get my camera out for this 26" fat sow which scored 6.5 lbs on the boga:

Started seeing some reds flash so I pulled out long-pole and cast to this 25" fella which gave a hell of a fight:

Buddy pulled out long pole and had 2 follows but no takers...

Despite the clouds, cold and wind we had a great time

Can't wait till next time
