Aucilla 3/28 & 3/29

Post by salty tiger »

I decided to fish the Aucilla during the Kayak tournament.

Prefished Friday and did more exploring than fishing. I ended up with a 53” slam that included this nice 20” flounder.

I also missed on a couple of nice reds and trout, so all in all I felt good about my game plan for the tournament.

I launched from the ramp at 7 Saturday morning with Paddle2u. I headed straight for the area that produced fish the day before while Paddle2u went to a couple of creeks he fished on Thursday. I immediately landed a 19” red and then had a nice one throw the hook on me. Although disappointed that I missed a big red I was still pleased with how the day started. I spent the next 3 ½ hours fishing for trout and flounder without even getting a single bite.

With time running out I make a gamble and paddle 40 minutes to the creeks Paddle2u was fishing. Upon arriving I bring in this nice little trout

Things were looking up. I paddled over to a spot that looked like it would hold flounder. Made a couple of cast and hooked up with this 18.25” flounder that ended up winning the Flounder division and me a new Perception Search 15 donated by Wilderness Way.

I ended up catching this red with a few minutes left to fish giving me a 58” slam. Not enough to win but respectable.

Thanks to Suber for organizing an awesome tournament and to the sponsors for donating some cool prizes. Everybody had a great time and we were able to support a wonderful charity doing what we all love to do, fishing.

I guess that's respectable...ish.

I'd say wining a new kayak and having a decent slam is frickin awesome, even if you did do better the day before. Tournaments have a way of degrading the catch you got last time you went. I always say the pressure gets your chi out of whack or something, but I have no real idea what exactly a chi is.

Thanks for the report. Those are some good pics and some great flounder.

Mookbait! At least 401 times better than live bait!
