Grouper bite is great ....Econfina March 29th

Post by Carlabear »

Didn't think we would get to Econfina this weekend but friends at the campground went out Thusday and caught their limit in less than 2 hours=====10 gags so we decided Hmmm.....seas 1-2 and great weather good bite lets go!

Left Econfina at about 0730 and :( out electric panel was out.....no depth finder or gps or radio..... but went with a small handheld gps and handheld radio. Filed a fishing plan with friends before heading out. Ran out to our first spot and trolled across it and wham. Tripple knockdown but lost one ......2 keepers in the boat first pass. We trolled couple more times over it and no bite so decided to bottom fish..... that was the trick. Caught 6 more gags and kept 4 keeper. 6 fish in 30 minutes..by 900 .. then everything stopped. We must have caught the end of the first bite. Had numbers and the approximate depth was 34-36 feet. Caught first fish on new purple stretch ordered from mann's for wahoo fishing on atlantic side, pink stretch and silver and black stretch. Dead goggle eyes and squid was the key for bottom fishing. It was great to see pink mouth grunts back again in good numbers and size. Last year it seemed they were scarce.

Continued trolling but no keepers but had several hits smaller throwbacks :o On way back to Econfina decided to troll another area north probably still in 32-34 feet not too far from our other spot. We finished off our limit with 2 - 20 lbers . What a way to end the trip . The 2nd bite was around the secound part of rising tide. It was a strange high tide in the afternoon about 3:00PM we got our limit. Looks like the gags are back this year. We have caught over 50 grouper in 3 trips since New years.... that is phenomenal compared to last year. Its a good thing since gas is 350 a gallon. :( Good fishing to all.....Carlabear :D
