Three trips at Ochocknee Bay

Post by Talltails »

Last Wednesday, I hit Ochlocknee bay. No yakkers or boaters were out on the water. It was windy, and the tide was a strong incoming. I stayed on the water for three VERY productive hours of fishing. The highlights were a 26" trout (my personal best) and a 27" red that weighed 9 pounds on the boga.

Friday I prefished the tourney with Mike Kogan from the Jax forum. We hit Alligator harbor early. I caught a couple decent reds on topwater, but the bite there was slow. We made a move and went back to Ochlocknee. Fishing the tail end of the outgoing and the start of incoming, again with no boat traffic, we did very well again on large trout and reds. I ended up with a 27" red, a 23" trout, and a 13" flounder. This gave me a 63" slam for the day.

Saturday I hit the water with what I thought was a sound gameplan. I paddled out to the bay again and started catching small trout. That was pretty much my theme for the rest of the day though. Small reds, small trout, and small flounder. My biggest for the day were 19", 19", and 13" respectively. A small slam of 51" was nowhere near close enough for the tourney. Overall, it was a great week of fishing and some good times with friends.

26 is a beast.
Three great days. Three really great days. Reminds me of why you had to talk me into entering the tournament at all. Thanks, by the way. :D Three great days and my read is that you did "ok". On Sat I caught a 24" trout at 8AM and had to immediately leave that spot to hunt other fish. Just ain't right. Caught an 18" flounder. Ended up with a 62" slam, fussing because I couldn't break 20" on redfish. One more inch would have won the slam. But I caught 15 redfish between 16 and 20", and I'm not jumping for joy?
Just ain't right.
I know, Meals on Wheels, meeting good people, good stuff.
I live in a tournament everyday. I fish to leave that behind. Ya'll can have it.

The Tarpon are coming.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.
