NFGFC April Meeting Recap and Pictures (Picture Intensive)

Post by caseycook »

We had a great meeting tonight at Beef O'Brady's. 77 people showed up to hear the legend, Noleflyfisher, speak about catching monster trout and redfish on fly.

Steve Taylor opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and introducing the officers. TinCan gave a quick tournament recap and announced that there will be a tournament this Saturday out of Jerry's Bait and Tackle - sign up by 6:30 a.m. and be back to weigh-in by 3:30 p.m.

Ganesh Chatani (sp) aka Noleflyfisher was the guest speaker tonight. He spoke about catching trout and redfish on fly and began by speaking about the type of set-up he uses. Please correct me because I have a feeling much of this section will be wrong. He likes an 8 weight fly rod for catching inshore fish, mostly because the heavier rod allows him to cast easier in the wind, a weight-forward 4 weight scientific angler fly line and uses a 20 lb shock leader that's approximately 18-24 inches long. Nole says that he primarily throws only about six flies on the flats and that his bread and butter are clouser minnows and toads. Nole sight fishes and stressed that you must be very quiet and move very slow when looking for fish. Additionally, you must pick and choose calm days in order to sight fish because too much chop will make seeing the fish near impossible. Many of the fish will be caught less than 50 feet from the boat and so stealthiness is a must. He uses two types of lenses on his glasses - one for fishing in low-light or overcast conditions and the other for bright sunny days. Nole's biggest piece of advice for novice fly-fishers is that you can't practice casting enough. A good drill is to set a hula hoop in your yard and cast to it trying to land the fly in the hoop - much like you would when casting to a gator trout or redfish on the flats. BIG THANKS to Noleflyfisher!!!!

The meeting ended with a raffle and many great prizes were given away. Our sponsors really take care of us...we gave away a cooler from Polar Bear coolers, a new Falcon rod, several mirrolures, hogy lures, bite a baits, red ripper spoons - big thanks to all those that give to our club.

Here are a few pictures from the meeting - it's important to note that I am now 2 for 2 in rod raffles in the last two weeks.... :-D :-D :-D

We won't tell you, but I really starting to think this thing is rigged. How could Ty and JT be profiting from this? :smt102

I have been trying to win one ever since FALCON started helping NFGFC.
So far I have had to buy all mine.
BTW, Kevins Outdoor shop has a good price on FALCON rods.
They are sweet.

I'd rather be lucky than good any day! :D Falcon rods are sweet...they're all I use now - it could be because I've won four in the last year. Keep 'em coming!!!

P.S. JT and Ty, your checks are in the mail... ;-)

just want to say BIG THANKS to noleflyfisher for coming out and speaking. You did an excellent job and that was a whole bunch of good advice, most of which is applicable to fly fishing and any other kind of flats fishin. Biggie Ups!

Thanks noleflyfisher  :D You did an outstanding job of sharing some pretty technical information in very clear walk'n round language. Really enjoyed your presentation.
