Get brain beat out getting to the end of St. Marks, finally get to rock garden, soaked from head to toe. Fish with the wind "a blow'n", Reel CB catches 2 short trout and a catfish. I snag something BIG pulling drag Reel CB decides he must help poor little me shake it off

First trip out of St. Marks 4/5/08
Might as well make my first post a fishing report. So... this is mine and Reel Cowboy's first trip out of St. Marks we usually fish Keaton in the gulf or my stomping ground in St. Augustine on the east coast. However, we decided that Keaton would be too far after driving from Moultrie to JBT's. I didn't sleep worth a dang the night before between the storm that blew in and the horses and dog having fits because of the weather (should have took that as a sign
). Decided to go ahead and get up about 3:30, Reel Cowboy rolls out of bed sometime after 4:00. Once we're ready to go and have the horses and dog situated, we finally roll out of the drive at 5:00. Get to Thomasville realize I forgot my fishing license as it starts to drizzle. Get to JBT's at 6:30, sign up, get to Shields guy there ticks Reel CB off, so he decides to go to the lighthouse to put in. Then the fun begins.

When I decide to talk to him again we pick up and try a couple of places he catches one more catfish. We finally decided to throw in the towel and call it a day at about 12:30. Of course I am just about dry, get brains beat out AGAIN, soaked AGAIN. Get back to lighthouse, pull truck around, while hooking boat on trailer I break the heck out of one of my nails. Change into dry clothes, find out that while being beat by the waves a chunk of the skeg was removed without our knowledge. Head to JBT's to see if anyone had better luck. Find that many had same type of luck, but was glad to see that some had better luck. Congrats to those that did well, to those that didn't do so well I feel your pain. Nice to see everyone, hope to try Port St. Joe next month. As for St. Marks, I don't care if we ever return, the drive to Keaton Beach doesn't seem that bad after today.

Re: First trip out of St. Marks 4/5/08
Ouch. The skeg hurts. Add losing a big fish because you got "help" and that is rough. At least you blame him. Sorry St Marks wasn't any better to ya. Thanks for the report and as far as I know this is the first time anybody seriously added breaking a nail to their story.
Ain't making light of it though

Welcome, RCG. Glad to have ya.
I hate you had a bad experience at St. Marks. I hate, even worse, you broke a nail.

Glad to hear you all made it out. Us lesser brave fair-wiather fishing folks just set back and read to your report. Actually your trip was just like I expected, wind, rain, brain beat out. Been there and had enough of it to learn to pick better days to give it a go. Sorry about the broken nail. I had a lower unit with a piece of the skegg broke off and it didn't seem to affect the handling of the boat. Can't imagine what a broke nail feels like....
Great report- What was the water temp in the rock garden?

That looks much more serious than a broke skeg could possibly be. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, RCG.

The nail hurt but I am happy to report that I'm okay, today I am nursing a sore back from being beat against the front of the console. However, the mercury looks like it hurts more. (See RCB's post under Boating topic Skeg Guard for pic.) One good thing that came out of the trip is we got to use, and I am happy with, the new Lowrance.

Hell...RC being from Moultrie should have the essential Colquitt countian repair kit - (Bondo and Duct Tape). With that he could have fixed the skeg and your nail
