Gulf Coast 4-5-8

Post by snatch-n-reel »

With The Blind Hog still on the DL. Casey and I pulled up to Jerry's around 6:15 with a 14' Lowe Jon Boat in tow. Talked with some folks and headed for the Aucilla. Stopped by the gas station to fill up the boat, saw BB and CT. CT gave some rods that Casey had ordered, he put them in the boat and we were off. 500 yards from the gas station i see something out of the corner of my eye in the rear view. "I think your rods just blew out." We stopped and casey got out and looked " No Rods." :smt009 A u-turn and a spot light and ten minutes later, rods found and were off again. Got to the ramp at the aucilla and there were white caps at the ramp. :smt011 Had talks of heading home. Started talking about alligator point, so we headed there. Got the boat in the water around 9:30 ran and fished a few spots nada. :smt009 . Said hell lets give Lanark a try. Got back to the ramp 11:30 handed Casey my keys to back the truck down. He backs the truck down I pull the boat on. He goes to get back in the truck to pull us out, but there is One PROBLEM keys are now locked in the truck  . So with the truck running on a sand ramp with the tide on it's way in :smt010 , spend the next 20 min with a coat hanger getting the window down. Decided to push are luck alittle more and head to lanark. payed the ramp fee launched the boat. headed out the canal heading east, stopped about 500 yards from the canal soaking wet. Well this is going to have to work. Made about 5 drifts towards shore picked up three keeper trout. In only an hour This is starting to look like a Mook report so after all of that we took our tired azz home. Great seeing everybody at the weight-in.

Getting your keyes locked in a running truck is better than losing them overboard.
It was a tough day for everybody.

Saturday might've been the worst combination of fishing conditions and vessel that I've ever been in. Big seas and a little boat aren't a good combination. When we rolled up to the Aucilla River, I think I saw a Discovery Channel film crew filming The Deadliest Catch in the river. Capt. Sig Hansen and the Northwestern crew waved to me as they passed.

The conditions were sketchy at best...I think most of us (99%) would've hit the snooze button on Saturday morning if it wasn't tournament day. Several times, Snatch and I looked at each other and said, "We're f'ing crazy." That's enough whining, but it really wasn't a smart decision to have that tournament - I think most of us would agree on that. The points race certainly affected our decisions on Saturday.

I don't think I learned anything on Saturday about fishing, only that it sucks getting pounded by waves. And that you can catch fish at Lanark in damn near a tornado four hundred yards from the ramp.

I also learned to always roll down the window when trailering a boat. Locked keys in the truck on a sand ramp with a tide that is coming in fast might be a worse feeling than having a good trout shake off at the boat.

It was good seeing everybody at the weigh-in and I'm glad we were all able to make it home safely. Let's hope for better weather next tournament.

Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.

got out on saturday and fished inside of alligator harbor. Fished for 40min got sick of the waves and made a run to a ramp way up the ochlockonee. While we were turning the truck around to launch we hear a "noise". The lower portion of the outboard was digging into the ground which was not good. We get everything organized and get ready to go and we realize the seal on the transom is off. shit. So we went home. But if we stayed any longer we would have been in big trouble seeing those thunderstorms on the radar when I got home. Glad you guys got some fish I am on a two week drought.
