St. Marks 2008.04.12 - Took a kid fishing

Post by Mook! »

Got out to the annual Take a Kid Fishing event this morning with mojokoko. We had a 9yr old girl assigned to our boat who had never been fishing before in her life. Took her out and hooked her and her chaperone with a couple of gulp/CT rigs while mojo and I took turns untangling knots, casting , and giving pointers. Our young guest hooked up with a trout nooooot quite a keeper within a few minutes. Like others have said, I was a little apprehensive about the whole ordeal, and all that went away within the first few minutes of fishing. The kids were all very well mannered and extremely excited and grateful for the chance to go fishing. Don and the folks form the house had everything very well organized and we didn't have to worry about anything. For those who missed it, I highly recommend giving it a try next time.

Weather was rough and wind howling, only slightly better than our drive out for last weekend's tournament. It was quite wet heading out due to wind shear and cross current etc. The kind of conditions where water was coming over the bow no metter how fast or what direction you moved. I tried my best to keep the ride dry and ust as we passed the lighthouse, a tidal wave came over the bow and nailed our poor girl. I felt horrible like I hope I didn't ruin her day; she turned around with a huge smile and cackled out loud like she wanted to try that again. For that we give her an honorary team Die-Hard merit badge...or something. She got the hang of casting after about an hour and ended up getting about 8 trout, mostly shorts, but she was so excited about every one of them. It was awesome to watch. Quote of the day from her, after getting a tidal wave in the face, rained on, cold etc - "I love fishing!" Of course we were instructed not to post any pictures of the children, but after the first time I got her wet, she was awarded my rain suit. All you could see were a couple eyes peeking out from inside...wish I could have shared that with y'all. Her chaperone was also great and caught a couple himself. Ended that at the fort after hot dogs and chattin it up a little with a couple of fellow NFGFC members.

The torrential fdownpour started as we walked to the truck from the fort pavillion. We head directly to...the gas station to put more gas in the boat. Then headed to the lighthouse ramp. The dozen or so boats that passed us going the opposite direction all looked at use like we was crazy fools. Got the boat back in the water at the lighthouse around 15:00 and re-earned our reputation. Wind picked up and the rain came in with extreme prejudice. The irony of it all was that the heavy rain calmed down the chop and we found some pretty glassy water. We didn't go more than 6-8 miles from the lighthouse as it looked like tornados, water spouts and possibly small hurricane or two were all around, but we managed to stick it out until dark. Totalled 25-30 trout total on topwater, jerk baits, and a few other things. I threw the Mirrolure Crankbait for the first time today, and in about 10 casts got 2 keeper trout on it. Not too shabby.

We ended the day fishing the high and turn to outgoing up some creeks. Mojo got a dang nice trout up there, but we saw only a couple reds and the ones that would hit were hitting really soft. Didn't reel any in today. I blame the 6 inches of water moving in 6 hours on the lack of reds getting anywhere near where they would normally be. Other than that the bite was just generally on..seemed like the nastier the weather got, the better the bite got, so we kept pressing on. Mojo had a fish hit a top dog - I saw the top half of the head of it, and about 3 feet away I saw a rear dorsal, at the same time...and I'm pretty sure it was a trout. Unfortunately, it spit the bait, nailed it again and busted through the leader like a hot knife through butter. If that was a trout, it's the biggest one I've ever seen. I saw enough of the head to know it wasn't a gar, which is the only other thing I know of that looks that much like a trout, so I'm assuming it actually was a trout...we'll never know. So that was exciting...here's some pics...gotta nap so I can go fishing tomorrow

Jsuber, our little Team Diehard member Gloria saw a yaker fishing by the lighthouse. I tried to explain to her that those are
people that fish from kayaks and not from boats. She then said "Who would want to fish in a kayak and not in a boat".

She said "Any fish caught in a little bitty plastic boat with paddles doesn't count"
