Headed to Lake Seminole with my BIL. With all the wind and nasty weather, figured Id go check out the crackers with him. He went the day before and put 65 grown uns in the box. Wind was still brutal but managed to put 25 -30 dang fine shellcrackers in the boat. Biggest about a pound and a half. Put it like this , i put my index and bird fingers together over his nose bridge and could still see his eyes on both sides . dang good box of fish for a couple of hours. We were just about to leave when I told BIL to head down to one little hole in the grass. I flipped my redworm in the hole and the cork disappeared. Im fishing with a 12 little jewel , 10 lb test and a number 10 tru turn. I knew I had a fish but it never occured to me what it was until I got him out of the grass. Total tally on the prehistoric monster was a bottomed out 15 lb scale and 30 1/2 inches long. Had to get a pic before sending his stinking azz back to the lake. Notice the papertowels Im holding him with, that biotch smelled like a sackful of buttholes!!! Good fight on the bream buster though!

Looked it up, 16lbs Ga state record, bet he didnt catch it on a bream buster! I may have thrown my claim to fame and notoriety back in the lake! Think of the pic ops Bad Behavior with a Bowfin and a breambuster!!! Life is so full of missed opportunities!!!

When I was a kid I Freshwater fished in the South Carolina foothills almost every day - only saltwater fish in Florida, and the bowfin is a fish I hadn't seen until your post, Bad Behavior. After your poetic description of the odor, was shocked to find this nugget of wisdom on the web while trying to learn more about bowfin (google led me to the following ESPN fishing link - http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fish ... finMudfish" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)...
Food Quality
The flesh is soft like jelly, but it is good to eat if prepared properly. Three methods of serving bowfin are smoked, fried as patties after dipping in egg and bread crumbs or stewed.
Based on your description, Bad Behavior, don't think I'll be seeking them for food value any time soon
Anybody on the site willing to admit trying them and share their opinion? Talking about the Bowfin (NOT sackfulls of ...)
"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank GOD for the United States Marine Corps." Eleanor Roosevelt, 1945
Bowfin (aka blackfish, mudfish) is some nasty chit I tried to eat it one time when I was a kid. We used to fish the Aucilla in Jefferson County way back up in the woods with this old guy that lived in Lamont. There were these bums that lived on the river up in the woods near where we fished. They "cooked" some mudfish for us one time in exchange for a bag of coffee, which they brewed in an old pot right there on the fire with Aucilla river water. I don't know if I have ever tasted anything as nasty since then. I remember the coffee being good though
Nice sized one though BB.......the closest I have ever came to your experience was catching one on a 10 ft. black widow fishing the edges of big blue sink on the Wacissa with a crawdad. Nice fight, but man do they stink!!!!!

Well dang, I know I threw back the record years ago. The big one I caught pulled my 20lb scale to the bottom....but then...I'm not real sad
