Panacea 4-18-08

Post by Good Times »

Dad and I struck out this morning for Panacea. Two "trucker's specials" and some go go juice at the Gas Mart in Woodville and we were ready to hit it. Put in at Rock Landing Road just after sun up around 7:20 on the low end of the tide. BMan was right. The pier is gone. Though I found one of the old pilings when I was waiting for Dad to park the truck. :o

We got out to the channel and were met with a stiff wind and 2-4 ft rollers. Hit our first spot and set up a drift. Dad had a couple of shorts on CT and Gulp and I got a keeper on an X-Rap Sub Walk. That's a pretty spiffy new lure. The water temp was around 66 degrees with intermittent clouds. We made a few drifts catching shorts here and there. As the tide came in we decided to run out to Shell Point Reef and try it. We were bobbing around out there like a cork. Nothing happening there.

Came back in closer and the wind had changed to a steady south wind (about 15MPH) and the sun came out. Other boats were starting to show up as well. We crept in and around some oyster bars and islands. Looked good but the wind started gusting higher and we spent most of the time fighting it with the trolling motor. We had a boat crank up and follow us to our spots for a while. That was fun. They were about 50 yards from us the whole time. We'd run, they'd run. We'd stop, they'd stop.

I looked out and saw another boat that looked familiar. 22ft Triton, black with a t-top and lettering on the side. I could just see that there were two B's at the beginning of the words. Got the Binoculars out and looked. The boat said, "Bottom Buster" on the side. BB looks like your boat has been pirated!

Great day of fishing, just not a great day of catching. Three keepers and some more shorts. The water never got above 67 degrees and was pretty murky. Got some practice in the wind with the Fly Rod. Damp ride back through some more 2-4 ft rollers and back to the house.
