St. Mark's 4-19/4-20

Post by Ron Wilson »

Decided to head to St. Mark's for the weekend. Left house after work, loaded boat with fishing poles, etc. and hit the road with the wife. We were meeting another couple to see if we couldn't get into some fish Sat/Sun.

Rough start to the trip. Didn't get too far down the highway before I noticed about 5 rods/reels were flying out of the boat. Landed in the middle of the road in a tangled mess with the reels sitting on the yellow line in the middle of the road and the poles spidered out into both lanes. As I walked the qtr mile or so back to the site, noticed traffic was heavy and thought....great, this is going to be ugly. Every car dodged the poles and I recovered without getting whacked. I think I've got enough damage on 3 rigs that will require some investment to replace. That's two trips with costly damage (boat required about $1,400 repair to the gelcoat from the last trip).

Got to the hotel late Friday evening and was ready for Saturday. Forecast didn't look good and we weren't disappointed. Wind was blowing like he_ _ all day. Everyone experienced a pretty good beating and was soaked. Managed two keeper trout. The women caught both keepers, and this fact was not lost on them. My buddy's wife remarked at the dock at Shell Island that "Mama brought home the bacon." Just what I needed......grabbed another  and took the verbal abuse like a man.

Sunday. Received call from buddy at 0600. He indicated they had enough the day before and were heading back. Wife pretended she couldn't hear me asking if she was going. so I was on the water by 0730 by myself (a little sore from the azz whooping the day before). What a beautiful day to be on the water. Started East in 3-5 feet. Nothing. Water seemed clearer to the East. Made a call to head to the West bank. Got there and noticed the water appeared pretty mixed up. Picked up a limit of keepers and several shorts. Missed an explosion on a Catch 2000, though I'm not sure what it was. Several ladyfish, a shark and a couple nice blues to round out the trip.

Can't wait until next time.

Sounds like a rough weekend. The worst part is getting beat by your wife....................and having to listen to it.

Saturday was rough everywhere. Glad you got out there and brought home the fillets.
