Aucilla 4/26 -27: A damn good weekend

Post by caseycook »

Saturday 4/26
Fished with my buddy Derrick and headed West. We were exploring new areas and the goal was to stay off the sweet spots until the tournament the next day. Went through the West Pass and settled into a nice little area in about 2' of water...we both miss good reds. We head further West and I have a blowup on the topwater...I miss the fish, but D, being the wiley crafty veteran, slings the twitchbait behind my topwater and hooks up with this 25" pig.

Image

We continue fishing West and I catch a nice 19.5" on a rockpile.

Image

We ease into an area known for its dragons and catch a few redfish, but none of the trout we were targeting.

The goal of the day was to continue breaking in the motor and so we make a big move back East to a spot I hadn't fished in a year....it paid off. It was an oyster bar in about 3.5' of water and on the first cast I had a big blowup on the topwater. I'm fighting a good red and D gets excited and tries to gas up on a cast and promptly backlashes. His JB falls in the water about 15' from the boat and sinks while he's picking the backlash. I get my fish to the boat and he reels his slack in only to realize that he too had a good redfish on. Can you say Double?

26.5" and 25.5"

We called it a day around 1 and took it to the house.

Final Tally: 2 trout to 25" ; 5 redfish to 26.5"

Sunday 4/27
Team Seatrout Tournament.

TyOneOn was on the DL and so I'd asked BayGator to drive over from St. Joe and fish the tournament with me. We launched from the Aucilla in the dark and made our way to spot 1. We get to spot 1 and a boat comes in to its West end and starts fishing. We make a minor move a couple hundred yards to the East and start whacking the redfish. We caught 13 redfish before 7:45 a.m. with several doubles and many lost fish.

Well, it's a trout tournament and while we like catching redfish, we decide to abandon ship and leave the area. At spot #2 I catch a small (15.25") trout on the topwater. The fishing dies until around 10 a.m. We move back to the same general area as spot #1 and are drifting. BG's throwing a twitchbait and I was throwing the trusty TW. I get a hit about 20' from the boat and we see it...oh $#@!@ it's a big trout. BG does a helluva job netting the beast - as he lifts her into the net, the treble hooks fall out...booyah.

We continue fishing and sort through some more redfish...the damn things wouldn't leave us alone. We move out to deeper water and BG catches a nice 22" that goes into the box. We end up catching a few more 16" fish and weigh a 27", 22", 16.5,", 16", and 15.5". We had 12 lbs, 5 oz and came in 2nd. We won big fish at 5 lbs. 3 oz.

BG, had a great time...when are you gonna learn to stay away from them damn redfish??? Trout fishing is where it's at. Enjoyed it bud...thanks again.

  I bet I know where you two were fishing. That area has always held big fish, more so than other areas. Congrats on 2nd place. :smt004
