Nearshore hole for the kids?

Post by Hit-n-Miss »

:-D Anyone know of a nearshore hole that would be good for black sea bass or whiting? Ecofina or keaton area. And how would you rig for them. I want my 7 year old to catch good eating fish till he can stand it any more. :-D

I'm not sure about holes in that area, but I've always been able to pull thwm out non-stop with Blurp on a jig-head or even at the end of an egg rig (1 oz). just let them fall slow. if they don't get hit on the way down, pull them up slowly 2-3 feet and let em sink back down every 30 seconds or so. they'll usually hit it on the way up when you do that. other jigs should work as well. This is the method I used successfully with a Chee-To on a jig head in 20 ft water near St Marks reef.

It's a tricky thing to find the right place for kids. Not real close to you but I do like the beach side of Bald Point.
There's always a lot to see and you can just set up sand spikes with bait and/or cast lures.
Sand castles, sun bathing, cooler, all close enough to the car. There's also decent fishing.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.

Do whiting bunch up in deeper water or are they only in the surf zone? How would you rig for sea bass?(shrimp or squid and size weight and hook) :-D

I was talkin bout sea bass with my jiggin technique previously. I wouldn't waste money on shrimp or squid if your kids are old enough to let it sink slow and jig it a foot or two a few times a minute. If you're set on using some kind of bait, go with anything made of meat and they'll eat it. Those suckers will eat anything. I'd maybe lean slightly toward cut squid just cause it dont' fall off the hook as easy when the little ones bite and can't get the hook. I think the hooks I normally use for such things is 3/0 or similarly to slightly smaller sized hooks on jig heads.
