Hooked up with Capt. Bobby and his friend from the fire department, Lt. Louie, on my son's 21&1/2' Key Largo bay boat, the Enterprise, Tuesday morning about 7:30 a.m. out of the Lighthouse @ St. Marks. The wind was N by NW about 15 MPH up towards 20+ MPH and the tide low (-0.4) as we went around the last bouy and zoomed off down the coast towards the Aucilla River basin. That air temp was down to about the 60's, so the jacket, long sleeve shirt, and long pants felt really good as Bobby pushed the throttle towards Warp 9 to get us on the spots around the river mouth as soon as possible. I noticed the water temp hovering around mid-60's to maybe 70, later in the day. That cool front sure played games with the reds, too.
We started throwing everything and anything to entice those pesky redfish (spoons, plugs, live bait, jigs, top water, etc.), but they were not there or were not having anything to do with us all morning as we searched out a dozen spots along the coast going towards the Econfina River! I had two huge trout blow up on my Silver/Black Devil Horse in about two feet of water around some oyster bars, but missed both strikes. We did catch some small trout, but not anything exceeding 18" at the time. The water was still that tea stained color from my last week's trip with Gene, which really didn't surprise me in the least. You know it is bad when you can't even catch a red on jigs tipped with shrimp or Cajun Thunder corks and live shrimp!
About noontime, we started easing our way back towards Grey Mare rocks and began picking up some better sized trout. Then, that is when it happened - ACTION STATIONS...Cobia Alert!
Next, we start trolling the outside the old stake line in about 7-8' water and Bobby picks up a 27" Cobia on a big gold colored Rebel shallow plug - we turned it loose after pictures, of course.
As we are fishing around the rocks about 4 p.m., my two "firemen" pick up on the shoreline around St. Marks burning - what with all the smoke and all, who could not notice. Well, we just had to go investigate that, eh. After another pounding ride around the corner to St. Marks, we arrive near the smoke and flames to discover - hey, we really are a little bit too close to all that heat there fellas!
Finally deciding that we have all had enough fish & fire, we put the boat on the trailer and go home! It was a sweet day with two great guys, caught some fish, and next week I'm headed to Mexico Beach with them (and Gene) for some OFFSHORE action (we need to give Aucilla a rest - don't you think).
