Playin off of fishmans post

Post by BAD BEHAVIOR »

Fishmans post brings me to another question. Ive just bought or I am buying Friday a Maverick 17MA with a Yamaha 115 four stroke as my second boat. I have been offered by a friend who has a dealership locally to upgrade the F115 to an Etec 150. The 115 and 150 weigh the same and Ive been told the fuel consumption was nearly identical except at the lowest rpms(which I never run anyway ;-) ). How do you think that boat will fair with either motor?? I like fast but I dont want to compromise the other fishing abilities of this boat by changing things. The four stroke is nice in some ways and the etec is nice in some ways. I ve already ordered all my accessories for the boat except the jack plate because Im trying to figure out what I want to do about the motor. All inputs are welcome on this.

Etecs are good motors. Very powerful. From what I understand, it is the same basic technology as the FICHT injection that put OMC out of business. High compression fuel injection system that burns more of the fuel making more power and less emmisions. They have just improved the design apparently. I've got a buddy with a 225 etec on a Ranger Bass Boat. He is probably about the same as BB on keeping his stuff in order. His boat is immaculate all the times. So I know he takes care of his stuff. But he also runs it. He has had problems with the fuel injection twice since he has owned it. Shut him down both times. He missed some tournaments that he wanted to fish. It was covered under warranty though.

I like the performace of the ETEC's. They are really hard to beat. Quick hole shot. Great HRSPWR to weight ratio. Quiet. Fuel Efficient. Blazing top end speed. It's a killer two-stroke. I'm just wondering if their engineering can hold up to the power they are producing in the long run. I would be sure I had a good warranty on it.

Now on the other hand, the Yamaha? Tried and true. Bullet proof. Could last you the life of the boat.

Glad you got the boat! I bet you'll love it.

Get the Etec, you know you want it.

Ask TC about the 115 yam.

That is all.

Leave the 115 four stroke on, yeah it won't be as fast but it will be cheaper in the long run. Can you even get insurance for a boat that exceeds the manufacturers recommended HP??????

Leave it to BB to ask a silly question to an obvious answer. Leave the dayum 4 banger Yammy on the back. Fast ain't always good. Your goal was econony and something to take a quick trip on. 4 stroke is the way to go I think. But you ain't never agreed with me anywho. Keep the Yammy   And what Capt Ron said too :smt010 :smt010

Capt Ron wrote:BB, I've given you my 2 cents on the jack plate, on the Maverick forum. The 17 MA is not rated for 150 hp so you are exposing yourself to a hell of a potential liability in case something should occur. I doubt that you would pick 4 knots top end...it's your call, but I wouldn't do it. oh yea ...Yamaha vs. OMC...ain't no way!
The sticker on the boat is rated at Max 150 hp. May be the wrong sticker, but thats what it says.

BB Insurance Co. maybe not much of anywhere else.
Like BH said ask TC about the 4 stroke Yammy. If it was mine I would keep the 115 but in something other than the Whammy.

I would recomend the max HP rated for the boat if you can swing it.
