Big Bend Saltwater Classic - Take a Soldier Fishing

Post by Reel Country »

After the great success of last year's Take a Soldier Fishing at the Classic, we're doing it again this year and looking for volunteers to have a soldier climb on board and fish in the 20th Annual Big Bend Saltwater Classic. This year, soldiers from Patrick Air Force Base will be guests for the Father's Day Weekend tournament (June 13-15). We are looking forward to hosting 25 soldiers this year. We'll help work out the logistics. They will all be staying in Carrabelle for the weekend and we'll be giving them complimentary registrations. Please let me know if you would like to Take a Soldier Fishing at the Classic again this year. We have over a month to plan, so hopefully we can get all these men and women rides for both days.

Also a little update from last year's soldiers from Fort Stewart. They have all been re-deployed in Iraq. All 30 from last year are doing good, no casulties. Two got married since the Classic. They are all looking forward to returning home and fishing the Classic in 2009. I have also sent a care package of old fishing magazines and tournament t-shirts over to them. I know many are still talking with their captains through email.

Once again, thanks for giving the soldiers this opporunity.

I had volunteered last year but I don't remember what the details were. I assume the Captains will need to be registered, what would be the cost and any other requirements or mandantory attendance issues? Where will the weigh-in's be held? Thanks.

Captains do not have to be registered, but you might catch that 1st place fish. We did give a $5 discount to anglers that took a soldier fishing.
Weigh-ins are at the tournament HQ at the Carrabelle Boat Club and the satellite weigh stations at Panacea Harbor Marina and our new location, Port St. Joe Marina. There are no mandatory requirements, except enjoying a day on the water with one of our soldiers. Anglers last year fished the from the flats to the Middle Grounds with the soldiers, so you don't have to change how you normally fish.

 If the gas $ don't kill me, I plan to be there for our soldiers (Airmen) again this year! I have stayed in contact with my tanker Sgt. guest (Raul) from last year over in Iraq...we made him a member of our FBBF fly club and we send him and his bro's different fishing magazines (somehow a darn old Gaff one got in there - I hope the state dept. don't send the FBI after me). They are all so appreciative for our efforts last year, so Simper Fi for this year. :smt007

WOW I'm so down for this. I'm going to be enlisting in the Air Force as soon as everything gets cleared: hopefully.

I WOULD LOVE TO GET IN ON THIS, IF BABE IS WELL ENOUGH I WILL BE THERE. I WILL LET YOU KNOW IN PLENTY OF TIME IF I CAN MAKE IT. I REALLY ENJOYED (TAKE A KID FISHIN) LAST YEAR BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO DO THAT THIS YEAR DUE TO BABE AND ME BEING IN THE HOSPITAL WHEN IT WAS HELD. KEEP IN TOUCH.

I haven't really decided yet. I have to take the ASVAB in two weeks. I got a 57 on the pre asvab after not even doing that stuff in a while so that's pretty decent. I got a book now that I'm studying. After that I have to go to MEPS in Jacksonville. I love troubleshooting so I might do Eletronics and or some sort of mechanic job.

Looks like we have a about 10-12 airmen coming up.

got rides for 7 of them right now.

All captains/guides/fisherman will be given VIP access to the A/C for a cold beer or two. Just ask JT51. ;)
