What's the greatest saltwater bitin' bug repellent nowdays? Anybody had any luck with Bug Mace? Is DEET a, no-no? :hammer:

treat your clothes/hats with Permethrin. will last on your clothes through a few washings and works good for skeeters and no-see-ums. good against ticks too. you can buy spray permethrin from places like Forestry Suppliers, Ben Meadows.

DEET works pretty well on most all the winged blood suckers except no-see-'ums. When the no-see-'ums get thick, they think of 100% DEET as hot sauce. Skin-So-Soft works on no-see-'ums. Not as a repellant, but it leaves an oily film on your skin and they're so small they get stuck in it and drown. Sunscreen applied thick and not completely rubbed in will work like this, too.

Like Barhopr said, Permethrin works well applied your hat and clothes.

For ticks and chiggers plain old powdered sulfur is the best I've seen. The last bottle I got was from CVS in Crawfordville, but any pharmacy should be able to get it if they don't have it in stock. I just dump some in an old sock, tie a knot in the top, and dust with it before getting dressed. Store the sock in a Zip-Lock bag.
Warning: The clothes you wear after dusting with powdered sulfur will smell like sulfur from then on. The clothes in the washing machine that you throw the sulfur clothes in with will smell like sulfur from then on. Sure it will eventually wash out, but some spousal units just don't seem to see the benefit of have tick proof undergarments. :smt017

A sprinkle of Pine-Sol here and there around the perimiter of the boat keeps out most flying insects "never really noticed the affect on noseeums though" :smt012 I guess I'll try and pay more attention next time I use it

I purchased Web-away Florida Special Insect Repellent through a group buy on another forum and have been pleased with the results. I mainly use it on no-see'ums, but I'm sure it would work on other biting flies. It is expensive, but worth it to me.

I have contemplated putting a ThermaCell on the boat (and definitely at the fish cleaning station at Aucilla), but have always wondered 1) if it worked on the noseeums and 2) how often you have to replace the cartridges?? Looks like some of you have had success with it, but any answers to the cartridge issue?
