LATE REPORT St Marks Friday 05/30

Post by Sir reel »

Saint Marks 05/30 also…

I had a friend from work, who I’ve taken out a couple of times in the past, send me an email last Wednesday asking if there was a chance that we could make a trip on Friday. To make it more difficult to ignore, he offered to buy my breakfast and help with the gas. My job circumstances have changed significantly in the past year so I wasn’t at all sure I could make it happen. However, the three W’s did line up with the stars and we made it to Savanna’s and then the light house by 6:45. Wasn’t but 4 or 5 vehicles so we didn’t have a wait and launched with three souls on board (took the dog) .

Made the obligatory stop directly in front of the lighthouse for a few minutes and although there was a lot of mullet and bait fish activity we didn’t receive much in the way of action. I took us on out in a South West direction and we made 3 drifts with the East South East wind at our backs. Had lots of lady fish action and a few short trout mixed in with some catfish. Conditions were a bit more windy than forecast at first and the offshore rollers were pretty heavy. The drift sock went out which helped some. Since we weren’t in the middle of a great bite, I pulled up and headed East. We reached a couple of spots just South of Stony Bayou in about 4-5 ft. and started some drifts. We found a few scattered trout but again nothing to write home about.

Moved again, farther East to Peters rock and tried a bit deeper water 8-9 ft but didn’t immediately find much and since my partner needed to be back by 2:30, we headed North into shallower water and finished the day in the 3-4ft range. The bait of choice for the day seemed to be a white gulp fished on a red head jig (no float) that worked very well for my partner. Cajun Thunder probably came in second and I’m not sure how many colors I used but I seem to recall chartreuse (no gulp) working well. I had top water and a floating/diving hard jerk bait rigged on separate rods and kept picking them up and working them but the fish didn’t seem to want them even when I knew we had fish around. We caught 7 or 8 small sharks using pin fish we picked up along the way, and numerous lady fish, one of which we used for bait. One remora also joined the caught list.

Three trout that were exactly 15 inches caught early enough to make me concerned about shrinkage so we released them.

Three more trout 16,17 and18 inchers and probably a dozen or so short trout. Water temp hovered around 81 degrees. We saw some grass but not as bad as what was reported in a couple of the reports from the creeks. There always seems to be one image that remains with me after a trip. This time it was a really nice trout that had freight trained my CT. I had the fish perhaps 20ft from the boat and got a really great view of a trout emptying it’s stomach and then throwing the jig. I can still see that happening in front of me!!
