St. Marks Solo Trip 6/1

Post by Troutinator »

Decided to skip out of Bible Study and head out after hearing good forcast for Sunday. Launched aroung 9 am to calm weather, and headed out past the birdrack. decided after hearing about MJsigns trip that live pinfish were the ticket. found a nice area just east of the birdrack to catch some bait, and set up a drift. as i was setting up saw a shadow under the boat, thinking it was just a pesky shark who was looking for shade. as i was bringing in a jig and Gulp, the shadow darted out from under the boat and picked up the jig, then spit it out as to say "Yuck". so it proves not all things like Gulp. Knowing a shark would not spit out a bait, I knew it was something of the Cobia species. Putting a live shrimp under the boat to drift, as the Cobia decided to investigate and take the bait, and take the drag screaming. after a good fight and one miss with the net, and a loud "YES", he was boated. Sure not quite big enough to keep but the excitement was there, 24 inches of First Cobia. Caught in 4.5 feet of water at 80 degrees, live shrimp just drifted next to the boat. there is just something about watching that bait in the water be inhaled by a fish, no matter what kind. the rest of the day was filled with a few sharks, couple of shorts, and a few long drifts looking for that next Cobia. You know when you start the day off that way, there is nothing and I mean nothing that will ruin it. So here is my first ever Cobia.

Also wanted to share my First Mate's first trout, that was caught a couple of weeks ago out of Lanark. the day was full of rain to start things off, and as being with a nine year old who doesn't want to get wet, she wanted to come in. Sure enough after convincing her a little water would not kill her, we were off again, heading out into a fierce wind, but good drifts to catch a couple of keepers and her very first Trout.

She was so excited, and even held it properly and did the good thing and let him go home to grow up for next time.

So now I am in pursuit of the new digital camera so as I will be able to post pictures without having to get them developed, (yes still have the 35mm), and creating the small mount so I can actually be in the photos on solo runs. Heading back out Sunday, to chase the next post.
