Just bought a rod and reel for catching some grouper and was wanting to put some good line on it for trolling and digging. I was thinking braided but would like a second opinion(cause i know everyone on here has one ) The highest the reel has listed on it is 50lb(or .60), the rod says 100lb? Any recommendations on size or type?
Thanks in advance.
Ben
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the telephone.
I'll make a quick call and see if I can find that out. I'd hate to reccomend something that could bust your setup. Once you go over a certain point your just puting your tackle at risk if you fish at max drag.
I don't know of anyone that sells it around here but i'd reccomend Izorline over Power pro. They have as good of quality control as anyone in the industry. There are no coating issues like PP can have.
The max drag on the reel is rated at 22#'s It could be easily tweaked for more if you wanted it but I don't know the reel enough to know that it will hold up. I'll have to go with TK on the 60-65# test.
That rod will work fine for diggin but for trollin you want to use a rod with a fast tip so you can see what your lure is doing such as weed fouled. It also gives the fish a chance to hold on. Power Pro works well tied to a Spro swivel (Smaller is better) with 2' 100lb wire leader w/ snap just in case Kings are on the prowl
You’ve reached middle age when all you exercise is caution.
FMI - Had a friend at a local fishing supply store that had one and liked it so I just bought it from him.
C22 - Thanks for the info, might need to invest in another rod for trolling it sounds like
Thanks for all the help,
Ben

I use Cajun Red 40# test on all my Grouper rigs aint been broke off except catching structure my prefered rod is a Penn Newport 20# to 50# rating, it gives good tip action and is TUFF but I bottom fish very rarly
“Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.”
I have Power pro 65 on most of my rods. Its so sensitive you can feel your live baits getting nervous and it will get the stretch plugs deeper with less water resistance. The only issue is a on some roller tipped rods it will get off the side of the roller.
