WARNING! Check your boat seats!

Post by electric chicken »

It's been about 5 months since I cranked the boat, so I decided I needed to crank it. Earlier this evening, I decided to get the boat out from under the shelter and back it into the pond in the front yard and crank it and run it around the pond, just to let it run basically. Well, I hooked the trailer to the truck and pulled it to the pond. I backed it into the pond, unhooked it from the trailer and pulled the boat over to the bank so i could climb in. When i climbed in and touched the seat, I found a very unpleasant suprise. Yellow jackets, (or that's what I think they are), have built a nest either in or under the seat. I started jumping around the boat like a crazy person, swatting at something that sounded like .22 bullets zinging around my head, and ended up jumping in the pond to escape. All in all I have 14 stings on me, mostly on my arms and legs and a few on my face and head. What I need to know is, how do I get rid of them? I can't see the nest. All I can see is them buzzing around the seat, but believe me, I know they are there!!! They are smaller than a bee or wasp, so Dad said they were yellow jackets. I sprayed the seat with wasp spray hoping to make them go away. All I know is, from now on I'm cranking my boat more often and gonna try to get the wife to check the seats from now on! I guess I should be glad I didn't trailer it all the way to the flats and THEN find the bees!
I'd rather be lucky than good.

yellow jackets or guiny wasps, both bad news. Wasp spray has always worked for me.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Sounds like it might have been Guinea wasps.

You came out better than a friend of my Dad's who went off-shore one day, after not having used the boat in a while, to discover a large nest of paper wasps in the bow of his Pro-Line.

Them guineas are some mean bastids!! Wait til dark and look the boat over real good with a flashlight. Theyll stay on the nest after dark unless you bump the nest!! Thats the way my professor did it in my bug classes in college.
