Keaton Beach 6-14

Post by Reel Cowboy »

Dad and I launched at the public ramp around 6:30 am to try and get out there for an early morning top water bite.
We ran north until Rock Island was about a 1/4" tall and started fishing. Second cast of the morning and a decent Blue decides the Top Dog is turning him on. After a couple of seconds of buzzing drags he comes aboard and into the cooler. 357 1/2 casts later I put the top water down and we both start bouncing jigs in 4' of water around some rocks and spotty bottom. Dad boats a keeper trout to 17" and he joins Mr. Tailer Blue in the cooler. I changed tw colors and go back to fishing. The coolest thing I think I've ever seen happened. A big something or nother rolled on the Popa Dog three times and finally eats and rips some drag and is gone, just gone. The Dog floats back up and gets casted back out to a hungry 19" trout. Nice. It's almost 9:00 and we're having a real big time. We moved to another little area and start fishing again. I'm ready to put the tw up and Dad proclaims its too late in the day and we're to deep for those fish to eat it. While just to prove a point I keep throwing the dogs. Three trout from 18 1/2" to 20" join the ice bath and Dad gives in and says there might be something to this top water thing. Dad boats another blue on New Penny Gulp. We land a couple more keepers and call it a day around 3:00. Back on the trailer and at the camper at 4:15.
We caught very few short trout and a pile of gafftop catfish.

All in all it was a great time with my Dad.
