Looking for some knowledge on tarpon

Post by Koenig »

Read Reel Slow's post on tarpon the other day. Man that was great! That is the stuff I dream about. I've got all the gear to do it, just can't ever get my fishing buddy (the one with the boat) to target them with a fly. Couple questions, What would you recommend by way of leader and tippet to avoid those break-offs? Also, any suggestions as to where I could find some good tarpon spots around here. Not asking for secret spots, just the type of terrain/habitat they like. Grass, hard bottom, deep, shallow, etc... Thanks in advance!

They are everywhere from keaton beach to destin, and in all the areas you described...the problem is knowing when they will be in a certain area...tides are a big factor on the flats and bait schools are the ticket around the passes/deeper. on the flats u have to be able to see the fish so good clear water and an sand bottom help for sighting them. as for leaders to avoid breakoffs....I'm not sure there is a castable leader that a big poon could not break...if there were, it would prolly be too large and scare the bites off. just my uneducated opinion

Thanks for the info guys, I do appreciate it. Guess I will go set up shop in a few places and see what happens. I see what you mean, if the leader were too thick the fly won't act right any how. Just have to TRY to be ginger with a lighter line. I've hear about "Bowing to the king", wonder what makes that work? Is it something to do with keeping the line angle down or giving him some slack? Anyone got a idea?

Thanks for the reply! Ok, just to clarify. You attach (15 to 20 pound) mono with loop. This loop is attached to the loop you have tied to the end of your fly line. This 15lbs line is only about 15" or so long? You then tie that to the shock tippet (60- 100 pounds) using a huffnegal or slim beauty knot? Does that sound right? You mention in there "class tippet" and "double line", can you enlighten me on what these are? You'll have to forgive me, I am not up on all the lingo.

Also, would you recommend tiying the fly onto the tippet using a palomar, dropper loop, or rapala loop?
