Met up at JBT at 5 a.m. to pay the entry fees and get in the various pots. Left JBT at 5 a.m. and made the drive West to Cbelle. Got to the ramp and it was an NFGFC party...the Bass Boys and BB and CT were already there. We all launched our boats and off we went. Started fishing a shallow grass flat with spotty bottom. First cast was at 6:30...the fishing was hot for the next 30 minutes. KVD caught the first two fish of the day, a 19.25" and a 16". I got on board with a nice 24.5" trout in the next few casts. Wehad our limit of fish by 7 a.m. and continued upgrading. We kept fishing the flat throwing topwater plugs until around 9:30. Made a move West to some more spotty bottom and continued catching fish. Brandon switched up to a fluke and continued whacking them. He caught a 22.5" trout on the fluke that went back in the water. We both missed a few good trout, but the fishing slowed considerably around 10:30 a.m. We fished a few more spots staying in the 2-3.5' range, looking for our final 19" fish, but we couldn't find it.
Our tournament stringer was 24.5", 19.5", 19.25", 19" and 17.5" and we finished 3rd out of 22 boats. I've fished enough tournaments to know that days like this are few and far between. It seems like we're always waiting until the last minute for either our big fish or our limit so it was a pleasant surprise to get it early. I had a great time with Brandon...he's 14 years old, but is a great kid and one hell of a fisherman.
