Aucilla 7-18-08

Post by dolphinatic »

Left the house at 5:00am this morning and headed down to the Aucilla for a change. On the way, we saw 4 deer, about 15 wild hogs and 7 turkeys. Talk about a wildlife morning..... When we got to the ramp, there were 2 trucks already there and 1 launching. Seemed kinda lite for a Friday  ....everybody else must have been working  We launched and ran out to 3 ft. and started throwing topwater. It was a beautiful morning with a light breeze and small ripple on the water....ideal for topwater....so we thought. We didn't get the first strike for the first hour we were there :x I used 4 different lures with no success. Not the first hit. We ran east towards Econfina and tried. Nothing. We were like "bump this" so we headed out to 10 ft. and started throwing jigs. The rock bass were all over us. Every cast netted one. I caught a few pinfish and threw one out the back to drift. About 5 minutes later, the water exploded!!!! I grabbed the rod and held on. It was a nice cobia. About 30 seconds into the fight, it was off......somehow the fish threw the hook :x I grabbed another pinfish and out he went. Before I could grab my other rod and start casting, the drag was running again. This time I got the fish......a nice 22" trout  We drifted for the next hour from 8 ft. - 14 ft. and caught many short trout, another keeper trout, lots of rockies and 4 little grouper. With the heat building and not alot of big trout bites, we decided to call it a morning around 11:00am. We loaded up and headed to Wacissa for a quick dip. On the way out of Aucilla, we found this thing crossing the road.....
