Carrabelle – 7/19/08
The Skipster and I left the house at 5 a.m. and headed West to Carrabelle. Got to the ramp and launched the boat around 6:35 a.m. We ran to spot #1 and both threw topwater plugs in spotty bottom ranging from 2-4’. We caught a few fish that would’ve kept, but the bite wasn’t really strong. We moved to the West to try some new areas (probably some of Jumptrout’s famed “holes”). We continued throwing topwater plugs over spotty bottom and caught fish here and there, but the bite was generally slow.
Around 10:30 a.m. we moved out to some deeper water that looked good on the chart that I’d never fished nor seen anyone fish. It was a pretty cool spot that had a primarily sandy bottom, but anytime there was a small contour change or grass patch, we’d catch a fish. We caught probably 25 trout to 23” on the spot on the Fighter and a grub. We packed it up around 11:30, had a nice lunch in Carrabelle and went home and cleaned the boat.

Met BayGator at the ramp and watched the sun come up on the water. We both missed good slot fish early on top, but were able to catch four over slot fish to 23”. BG nailed three of them on a twitchbait and I caught one on top. At 9:30 a.m. I spot a tarpon rolling off the front of the boat, but don't say anything to BG. At 9:32 a.m. BG's drag starts singing and a 60-70 lb. tarpon jumps out of the water and breaks off his jig. Pretty cool.
Around 10 a.m. we were fishing an area that Brandon and I had caught some fish on last week which was basically spotty bottom in 4’ of water when I had a hit on the fluke. I hooked the 15.5” trout and the fluke rode up the line about 2’. In the process of fighting the fish, the fluke was fluttering on the line and a MONSTER trout, one that looked like it could swallow the 16” fish, hit the hookless fluke three times. It did this all no more than 15 feet from the boat. Pretty cool, but depressing at the same time.
BG and I continued fishing in search of good slot fish, but couldn’t find them and so we struggled at the scales. Our stringer was 23”, 22.5”, 18.5”, 15.5”, 15.01”. We weighed something like 10.5 lbs and came in 4th. We had a good time and caught a bunch of small trout, but just couldn’t find the good slot fish.
