Aucilla 07-27-2008

Post by Tom Keels »

Got an invite to fish with Mr. Vickers this morning aboard the Gator-Trax "padna". We arrived before daylight and watched the light show from the thunderstorm for a few minutes then decided we were ok to go. We made it to the first hole with just enough light to dodge the crab traps.

First fish in the boat was a short red for on topwater. We continued to throw topwater pretty much the whole day. The fish short struck quite a bit and we both missed several.

John had a couple of nice fish pull the hook. I snapped a picture just as the sun came up.

This was my view for most of the day.

We continued getting strikes until something pushed a wake behind the spook and blew it up. This was the result.

After a couple of bluefish and short trout I managed another small red.

We moved to an oyster bar nearby and from the platform I spotted all kinds of fish around. About 2 minutes later a school of fish starts to work down the bar. My bait lands first and I hook up, Mr. Vickers sends his spoon 750 yards south as he backlashes on his cast. After a few minutes here is my result

Mr. Vickers however had the last laugh and hooked up about halfway through my fight with the jack. He did ok I guess.

We messed around for a little while longer with nothing much to show for it. We decided it was cooler back at the house so we left around noon.

All fish were caught on topwater, mostly spooks. Depths were 1-4 feet around structure. Water temps were 83-86°. We had a good time despite the lack of catching. Thanks for the ride Tin Can.
