Keaton Report 7/26/08

Post by Breambuster »

Left Tifton at 6 am together with Ddb but didnt get on the water until almost 11 am due to a problem in renewing my fishing license. We fished a couple of miles north of Dekab beach in 6' water most of the day.

Wife was first on the scoreboard, with a nice 17'' fish.

This fella hang out with us for a little while when we were catching bait.
Image

In between catching bait and netting fish, I managed to put a barely keeper in the boat. Hint to novince fishermen; reach way out in front the camera if you want to make your catch look big.
Image

Its now Calvin turn. With his secret bait, he landed this 21''
Image

Of course, seeing all the fun his sister decided to join in on the action and pull in this 20''

By 2.30 pm, we had 4 keeper trout and a seabass, and probably half dozen throw backs. Since the goal of this trip was to get a few fresh fish for dinner and then find a few scallops, half of our mission was accomplished.

Calvin was the first to jump into the water. We were in 2-3' water.

We found quite a few scallop, including this one Carmen found. We quit at 5.00 pm when the crew got tired of fighting the current. We ended up with 4 gallons.
Image

We ran into quite a few inconsiderate boaters, which was not surprising given that its weekend. This boat was running fill speed about 40 yards away from us.

Hope yall enjoy the pictures and report. Thanks for reading.

Great report. Sounds like a good time with the family. We was down at Keaton a couple weeks ago and did well on the scallops. Also noticed a boat or two traveling at what I would consider excessive speeds in an area full of scallopers.

Not a bad catch at all. It's great to see the kids having a blast on the water.

We are coming down to Keaton again this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, and would greatly appreciate any tips you could provide us in finding more scallops. Calvin's secret bait is not so secret..... he was using a 3'' pigfish. But he likes to call it the "secret bait" because that's the bait fish that he gets excited about when I catch them with my bait rig. Also, its not that common as compare to pinfish.

:-D Breambuster where did you try for scallops? We are planning on going to the 9 mile sand bar to play at low tide early. We will check around grassy because it will be close. But if they are not there we are heading to our spot near dekle. :-D Hail me on 14 around 10:00 before we get to scalloping.

The current plan is to be on the water at around 8.30 am or so, and we will start the day scalloping. With another family joining us on this trip, we have 3 young kids - I usually let the kids do the picking. The current seems to be not as strong during out going tide, so I want to get the scalloping done early. This also give us more time to fish. Anyway, we likely will be heading to Dekle or a little north of it depending where the pack of boats are. Will try to call you on the radio on 14. BTW, I usually stay on 16.

:-D Low tide is going to be at 9:15 so we are going to hit the sandbar first. But I have been noticing that the scallops seem to come up out of the grass in numbers around 10:30. We would start at 9:30 in an hour pick up little and think we need to move. Then bam they are everywhere that you already looked. How deep have you been having luck with the fish? I try to stay off 16 if you talk to much the coast guard will tell you to change channels. Thats the emergency channel. After limiting out last week we headed down to the mass of boats, to scout, only to find that there were very few scallops there. Our Kenner will be in the Dekle area as well.
