RedFishin 2008.07.25 - 26 Mook Rides Again!

Post by Mook! »

So I haven't posted many reports lately. In the last 5-6 weeks I've only been fishing a few times, and was glad to finally get a chance to get out some this weekend. Headed out with Mojo for a little late afternoon / early evening run Friday, then on a whim decided to do the JBT redfish tournament Saturday.

Friday we got out late afternoon, ran over to some areas we've chased big reds in the past. Had to stop short due to shallow water, but it was the rise, so we lifted up the motor, and pushed and trolled our way slowly across some flats, gettin stuck here and there and waiting on the rise. Within 10 minutes of cuttin off the big yammy-ha, we were in to some red action. I put a 24 in the box. 10-15 minutes later I put a 25 in the box. 10 minutes after that, Mojo broke off on a monster. 10 minutes after that, he lost another one. 10-15 minutes after that, I landed an over-slot, and so on, you get the idea. For 3-4 hours straight, we didn't go more than 10 minutes without a redfish on. After bagging 2 nice sized keeper, I proceeded to catch several more, including 3 consecutive over-slot reds at 31, 30 and 29 inches respectively, all on a small topwater lure (Spook Jr). I still laugh at this big fish big bait stuff when it comes to reds. I say, big bait, big noise, big spook-a-da-fish. I'm up to about 25 over slot reds caught this year and only a couple of them have been caught on anything over 3.5 inches. All but 3-4 have been on the super spook jr. Anyhow, got some pics and videos from that below.

Saturday - Me and Mojo met up around 5:30 and he says there's a JBT redfish tournament, so we enter and make the mistake of going out the lighthouse. Scallopers everywhere, couldn't run the boat hardly ever the dive flags were so thick. Fishing was way off the day before, and tide pattern was outgoing all day. The only decent keeper we got was a 24.5" that I got on a redfish magic spinner and weighed in at something like 4.38 pounds. I heard it was good enough to beat a team with two fish, so that's nice, but no money for us. At least we didn't break the law or weigh illegal fish to win money, and went home with some shred of dignity left. :smt098

Oh by the way this is the first time I got to really use my new Falcon LowRider spinning rod, so that's why I got a couple pics of that thing. If you, like me, always thought > $100 for a rod was ridiculous even though you use $200-300 reels, you are as mistaken as I was. I will be buying more of thse fo-sheezy! In the last video you can really see it go. Had the fish come around the bow, and even though the rod is very light and flexible, I was able to dig and horse a 29" redfish out from under the boat when he started going nuts on me.

The new rod - Falcon Low Rider XG 'Shakey Head Jig' spinning - with stradic 4000 and 10lb Sufix braid
Thanks to JT51 for getting them to hook me up with that

Might wanna turn speakers down for the videos - the wind was ripping pretty good.

First video is of the 30 or 31 inch red that I caught, but had to do some serious editing. Camera was a little wet or something and got funny lines all over the film.

This is a better video of the smallest of the over slot fish I got Friday

oh by the way - not to short-change Mojo - he caught some huge monster trouts in the midst of all this. I kept askin him if he wanted pictures to go in the report, to which he replied ad nauseum "Nah I wanna get some reds" Wouldnt' even let me measure his monster trouts...just chucked em in the water and kept on grindin....

Any team(s) that culled fish is/are thus considered by law to have exceeded their daily bag limit by taking posession of more than one fish per licensed angler, thus making their entire catch illegal, regardless of size.

To me, part of the strategy of a non-permitted redfish tournament is knowing when to have the cajones to chuck a fish back in the water not knowing if you will catch another keeper that day. Sometimes you do and it hurts you; sometimes you don't and it hurts you. Last 2-fish red tournament I did, first keeper of the day was 3lbs on a tough day, didn't yet know it was a tough day, chucked it back in the water. Caught a 6lb fish later on, but no more keepers. Finished 0.2 lbs out of cash. I guess it bothers me a little when people break the law and get my $50. Wouldn't have made a difference this time cause I didn't have a lot of weight, but I thought I'd passive-aggressively harrrass anyone who might have done anything like that in Saturday's tournament.

Excerpt from an email posted on another forum:
(2) "Harvest" means the catching or taking of a fish by any means whatsoever, followed by a reduction of such fish to possession. Fish that are caught but immediately returned to the water free, alive and unharmed are not harvested. In addition, temporary possession of a fish for the purpose of measuring it to determine compliance with the minimum or maximum size requirements of this chapter shall not constitute harvesting such fish, provided that it is measured immediately after taking, and immediately returned to the water free, alive, and unharmed if undersize or oversize.

(1) Bag Limits - For example, red drum (redfish). No person shall harvest more than one native redfish per day, nor possess more than one native redfish while in, on, or above the waters of the state or on any dock, pier, bridge, beach, or other fishing site adjacent to such waters. Elsewhere, no person shall possess more than two native redfish at any time.

The definition of possession and its use in the Bag Limit language prohibits culling or high grading redfish. Possession is basically anything other than immediate release or time needed to determine the size of the fish. Once you put a fish in your live well, you have taken possession of that fish. Trading that fish out for another fish means that you have now possessed 2 fish, which exceeds the daily bag limit for redfish. Any person doing this, tournament competitor or otherwise, is violating the regulations.

Thank you for your inquiry about this subject. I hope the information I have provided will be useful. If you have any further questions or comments regarding culling, please direct them to Andy Strelcheck at (850) 488-6058 ext. 214.

No - IFA and FLW get culling permits, which have a ton of rules and regulations attached, so no they are not breaking the law as long as they follow tournament rules and the regulations associated with the cull permit, and are releasing as many fish as possible unharmed, including the ones that are weighed in.

See more info on that here http://myfwc.com/marine/redfishcatchhold.htm

I think the culling law could use some ammending. If you have a functional livewell and can release fish unharmed, why not make it legal? Just my .02.

I thought I passively informed them - Mook comes in the door with guns blazing :smt005

BG, Mook is correct they issue culling permits. IFA actually issues two permits cause my padna likes to throw the first one away :o

I personally think it's a stupid law - but it is the law.

But if we want to get technical I am sure the following are infractions of some law:
Going #2 in da water
Tossing a bottle or can overboard
Dripping oil from your can of weiners overboard
Drinking and operating a boat
Throwing monofilament overboard
Throwing a soft plastic overboard
etc...etc...etc

I am curious as to what is the definition of a native redfish?

Nice fishing report Mook
