Hickory and St Marks weekend of 8-17-08

Post by jsuber »

Blustery wicked weekend but there were fish. I made it out to Hickory Mounds early in the AM. The clouds were spitting lighting down on the water due South of me and with the surface winds out of the West I gave it a shot. Tee water looked really good for Top water and All I managed was the attention of a pretty good size Shark. I looked to my South and saw the clouds were bearing down on me so I paddled about a half mile back to the creek mouth and was going to sit out the rain in there. While there I tossed a Capt Mike spoon and picked up a 22” Redfish. But after the clouds passed the rain got worse. After sitting in the rain with no jacket for 45 minutes I headed in.

Sunday
FCKA had a monthly tournament and this month was a Redfish tournament at St Marks lighthouse with lunch afterwards and prizes donated by the Wilderness Way. Everyone caught Redfish and the biggest one at 25” was caught off the long bar just 500 yards from the lighthouse. I only caught one short and paddled all the way to the end of the East River. At 10:23 I turned around and paddled back to get to the lighthouse at 11:50. What a long paddle. Lots of Alligators too up in the East River. On my way I tossed a Pink Capt Mikes Spoon and picked up a 19.5” Flounder working the banks near the grass. Awesome fish and the hook was all the way around the jaw. I threw him in the livewell behind my seat and came on in. That was a nice flounder and my biggest one in the gulf. Funny, that’s the limit in Chesapeake Bay.
