..I think a generator purchase will be in my future...any advice on what I should buy ????
A 5000 watt will get you by during a power outage.
A 10KW will probably run your whole house.

"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

UPDATE ON THE SOUTH 40
I WAS HOPIN THAT WE HAD SEEN THE LAST OF FAY!!!!!! SINCE MY LAST REPORT WE HAVE HAD ANOTHER STORM COME THROUGH GRADY COUNTY DROPPING ANOTHER 4 6/10THS INCHES OF RAIN. THIS GIVE US A TOTAL RAINFALL SINCE NOON FRIDAY WELL IN EXCESS OF 33 INCHES OF RAIN. I HAVE LIVED A LONG LIFE, MOSTLY IN FLA. , HAVE BEEN THROUGH 9 HURRICANES AND TOO MANY T.S. TO REMEMBER. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE SEEN AS MUCH WATER FALL LIKE IT HAS IN THE LAST 5 DAYS. AS I WRITE ANOTHER THUNDER-STORM IS COMING OVER THE FARM RIGHT NOW, MAYBE TOO MANY OF US PRAYED TOO MUCH FOR RAIN IN THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS, I GUESS WE ARE GETTING OUT PRAYERS ANSWERED NOW. LORD WE DON'T NEED ANYMORE RAIN, SEND IT UP TO HOTLANTA.

Years ago, I found a fairly new motorhome at a junkyard that had been burned from halfway all the way to fhe front end. The generator (Onan) was in the rear. I was able to purchase it for 500 bux. It had 24 hours on it. It still runs great. It is a 6.5 Kw and will run my whole house except for the downstairs A/C unit. But the upstairs unit cools the house enough for storms, cuz usually it is cloudy anyway. I mounted it on one of those 4x4 trailers that come in a box you put together ($ 159 bux).
Just another option for those thinking of a Generator.

She kept me watching Sat TV, watching Weather on the Internet, and drinking cold beer for 9 hours friday night...

One other thing when using a generator. If you hook it to your home wiring, be SURE you have the disconnects at the mains OFF. You can actually kill a lineman with backfeed from the generator. I have the outside disconnects so I can totally isolate the house from the power grid.
