Keaton 8/29/08
Well, I just couldn't stand it anymore and the wife was tired of hearing me growl , so we went to Keaton and tried 'em. Trying is about the word, the fish were hard to come by. Didn't get there til 10 am, went North to Dekle and the water didn't look bad. Was clear in 3-4 ft. so caught a bunch of pins for the livewell and set them out. Then the tide started coming in and brought a lot of dark water with it. Caught 3 small trout there and moved to look for clearer water. Tried several spots and never got out of the stained stuff. North wind kept the tide from coming in good so very little water movement today. We made it around to Piney Pt. and tried it a while with only a hardhead to show.
The water was a little clearer there but a lot of floating grass made fishing difficult. Moved back around to the Keaton birdrack and settled in an area we have always caught a few in, the grass wasn't bad and bottom looked spotty. The wind shifted to the Southeast about 2 pm and for about 30 minutes we caught 2 good trout 15.5 and 18.5 and a keeper shark, plus a few small trout. Neva lost a good trout right at the boat, I couldn't quite reach it with the net and he got away.
When the wind got up and it got rough the bite just stopped, went to nothing.Quit at 3 pm with a good mess of fish and drank about all the cold liquids on the boat, man, was it hot today!
The pint of ice cream at the store made going in worth it. I don't know how the other boats did today, most of them had already gone in when we left. Good luck if anybody goes this weekend.

Nice report. I'm envious that you got to go at least. Looks like it will be at least another week for me.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like you had a decent day and good to know that the trout are still bitting despite the stained water. I thought about going tomorrow but am not too fond of 20-25 knots wind, so looks like I will have to wait for another week. Did you see any pogies or other bait in the flats? There were all over the place last week before TS Fay hit. Also, did you look for any scallop?
Dont be too concerned about stained water especially if you know the fish are in the area. Just fish more agressively like popping the cork more often. A lot of times, they will hit right when you pop the cork. Just be sure to pay attention and not letting the fish take the rod off your hand ......... had that happened to me more than once.

Breambuster, we only saw one bait pod all day, and some big critter was tearing into it. He never came close enough to the boat or I'd have thrown my She-Dog over to it. We didn't scallop but there were several boats there trying for them. The few trout we caught did seem to hit right after the bait hit the water, and we did pop the rigs some. I hoped we'd have a day like you had last trip, but it didn't happen. It was still good to get out there again, and other than being hot the weather was good.

The area around Keaton is really the only spot on the Gulf that I have gotten to know fairly well. I don't get down very often but have caught fish there for the past 40 years. I really appreciate the reports from you guys that live closer. It seems all fishing memories are good. I love checking reports on the forum. Thanks again.
