Broke Antenna Questions??

Post by RodBow »

(sorry no pics - camera recharger lost)

A limb last week fell and broke my 8' antenna about 1.5' from the base.
When I took it apart I found that the top 32" of the RG58 wire had broken in two but it appeared that it wasn't from the trauma of the break - like it was an old break :o

(I had noticed that people were "ignoring" me out on water alot)

Where the two pieces used to join there is a 2" sleave taped to the side of the insulation as if to reinforce the joining of two sections of wire (bottom to top).

Q: Does anyone know how the RG is SUPPOSED to be put together inside the fiberglass antenna? Is this thing repairable by replacing/soldering in a new top section of RG
AND can I fiberglass the two pieces of the antenna back together for a fix??

Or just buy a new antenna altogether? $100-$150
Thnx

Buy a new antenna, or continue to be "ignored". Just hope it is not an emergency. Is your life worth $ 100-150?

Well, if you can repair the wire, solder or whatever, you can cut a 12" piece of 3/4" or maybe it's 1/2", pvc pipe. 'Cut a slot in the pipe length wise with a saw or dremel, so it will spread, then, tap it down over the break. Makes a nice tight fit and last a long time. Of course, that for a cracked one or a minor break. Might not work on yours, if it crushed and in two pieces. If that's the case, a new one is in order, as per the above suggestions.
My neighbor, Freddie fixed one like that, someone stepped on. That was 2 or 3 years ago and it is still in service and works fine.
Good luck with it. Q
