Depth Finders
Looks like my depth finder may have gave up the ship. I have a 2380 Carolina Skiff most of the time if I have it on I am not hunting specific stucture because I fish in shallow clear water not trying to see fish just general depth info. I may at times want info like that. I am trying to select a replacement and get something that will function but not break the bank.
Any ideas on what the best choices are would be appreciated.
WAM out.

Re: Depth Finders
Iread an article the other day on ESPN Outdoors and they feild tested the side imaging Hummingbird and a Lowrance side by side and the Lowrance gave a better detail of "regular" sonar stuff. But the side imaging was also amazing.
You can pick up a cheap black and white Hummingbird sonar at Wally World or places like Bass Pro generally have some sort of sale going on them.

Eagle Cuda is an inexpensive and popular one with temperature sensor

Do the Humminbird. There is a good chance they will become club sponsors next year.
Plus, from personal experience their customer service is great.

The Humminbird side imaging is not for shallow water( 3ft and less)....but it seems to be a neat thing for deeper water......(offshore) and lakes
I have an Eagle Dual frequency 2000C. Except for a little key problem (which they fixed for free) I love it.... You have to decide whether you want a spit screen single unit, or get 2 units, one GPS, and the other Depth finder. To me, it was simply a space issue to get the all in one unit.
By the way. Eagle and Lowrance use the exact same Tech support and repair centers....Technically, they are the same....
I will have to say Eagle/Lowrance has the best images on depthfinders....I also love the record feature where you can record your depthfinder, then play it back at home on your PC. I have found some good rocks that way....

The more I know about something, the more I know that I did not know as much as I thought I knew that I knew.
Re: Depth Finders
Or you could just contact Garmin and send it in and for $100 get it fixed or replaced

Re: Depth Finders
I don't know who's making the best depth finders, but I do know Hummingbird's customer service is excellent.
Re: Depth Finders
Furuno or Lowrance..Raymarine may be a little too high $ wise. Cheaper units seem to work better in shallow water probably due to less power output.

Re: Depth Finders
Unless you plan on fishing offshore, color is useless as well as dual freq.

Re: Depth Finders
What about the 3-D? I guess I would like the ability if / when I go deeper to really pick off the Gouper or the Pinks and Blacks.

Never used it or seen it used so I can't comment. It might be the best thing since sliced bread or it might be a gimmick.

Re: Depth Finders
The 3-D is a cool application but expensive. Probably more than you'll need or ever use for most of your fishing in the shallows, WAM.
