St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers 9/5

Initially targeting mullet on hook and line, a friend of mine and I hauled his boat to the St. Marks River yesterday afternoon. We put in at Newport and went up a little ways. The river is high, but within it's banks, very dark with tannin, and flowing very fast. We went up to a place where we knew there would be an eddy and tried for a little bit. I flipped a teeny-tiny Rapala up into a pocket against the bank and caught a teeny-tiny bass. We tried for the mullet for a while. Nothing happening and decided to give it up and go give the Wakulla a try.

Put in at Lower Bridge and went up. The water was pretty dark, but not as dark as the St. Marks and not as fast flowing. The water was clear enough to see that most of the eel grass appears to be gone. The river was spread out into the river-swamp, the banks of this river being lower. Did nothing with the mullet, so after a while we switched tactics and tried for bass. Easing along on the trolling motor casting to the banks we did nothing so decided to crank up and try another stretch of river. We went a little above Mysterious Waters beat the banks for a while and still doing nothing, we decided to call it a day.

I'm just glad we went so I could let you folks know the condition of the rivers. In case anybody else had plans, so they wouldn't be disappointed when they got there.

Wow, that's tough, Charles. I haven't caught anything in my favorite pond since the water rose several feet, either. I guess all the fresh water still has 'em messed up.

if the eel grass is out of wakulla then when the tide goes out the bass fishing will be amazing soon. when dennis came a few years back it was the same. without the grass in there the tide falls three to four times as much. it puts all the bass in the deepest bends with structure. wait till next weekend. makes me want to go back to my old haunt. lol. i used to live there in mysterious waters. watermelon flake senkos on a small c-rig kills em. good luck.
